Is it true you can get the Fenty Beauty look on a budget? According to TikTok users you can, and the brand's coveted Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer has seemingly met its match in a $10 drugstore dupe.

In this video from creator @mangomoniica, the beauty influencer calls out Maybelline New York's Lifter Gloss and Fenty Beauty's Gloss Bomb products as being essentially "the same thing."

In order to see if the Maybelline NY dupe really lives up to the hype, I decided to review the two products myself in the ultimate lip gloss face-off.

Since its debut in 2017, Fenty Beauty's tried and true Gloss Bomb range has reigned supreme in terms of being one of the brand's top sellers. As a matter of fact, the product recently won Allure's Reader's Choice Award for 2021, as well as Glamour's Beauty Award for 2021.

The Fenty Beauty Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer includes moisturizing shea butter and is designed to leave lips looking fuller. It's available in a range of shades, including a clear gloss, as well as shimmer and high gloss finishes.

Comparatively, Maybelline NY's Lifter Gloss in shade Pearl is part of a colour range inspired by golden hour, in which this lip gloss formula includes hyaluronic acid to help you achieve fuller-looking lips.

Similarly to Fenty Beauty's Gloss Bomb, this lip gloss also comes in several gorgeous shades, as well as shimmer and high gloss finishes.

Comparing the two

Upon first glance, the formulas look nearly identical when compared alongside their respective packaging. However, it's important to note that Fenty Beauty's Gloss Bomb features 0.3 fl. oz. compared to Maybelline NY's Pearl, which totals 0.18 fl. oz.

Up first, I applied Fenty Beauty's Gloss Bomb to the top and bottom of my lips. The product lived up to its claims of feeling non-sticky and offered tons of sparkle and shine. I would go as far as to say it looks glittery as opposed to shimmery, but all in all, my lips definitely looked fuller and it felt comfortable to wear.

Next up, I applied Maybelline NY's Pearl to compare and contrast, and honestly, it was hard to tell a difference between the two.

The Maybelline NY lip gloss definitely looked slightly more "shiny" as opposed to "glittery," but the colour payoff was nearly identical, and this gloss also made my lips look fuller. However, once applied, I noticed that this formula made my lips feel slightly sticky.

Although the product has glowing reviews on Maybelline's website, one user pointed out that the product is not very long-wearing.

Verdict

Move over, Fenty Beauty, Maybelline NY has entered the chat. This face-off made it pretty clear that the Maybelline NY Lifter Gloss in Pearl is definitely a dupe for Fenty Beauty's Diamond Milk Gloss Bomb Universal Lip Luminizer.

The two deliver nearly identical results in terms of colour and shine while ensuring your lips look full and plump. You can't go wrong with either lip gloss formula, but if you're looking for a long-wearing formula that's non-sticky, it may be worth it to splurge on Fenty Beauty, in which you can shop the brands updated shade range here.
