After filing a lawsuit against ex-boyfriend Shia LaBeouf for "relentless" sexual, physical, and emotional abuse during their year-long relationship, singer FKA twigs broke her silence about the allegations on social media.
On Instagram, the 32-year-old revealed she shared her story in an effort to help other victims of domestic violence. "It may be surprising to you to learn that i was in an emotionally and physically abusive relationship," she began her lengthy post, which included a screenshot of The New York Times report that detailed the alleged abuse. "it was hard for me to process too, during and after i never thought something like this would happen to me. Which is why i have decided it's important for me to talk about it and try to help people understand that when you are under the coercive control of an abuser or in an interpersonal violent relationship leaving doesn't feel like a safe or achievable option."
She added that by coming forward with her experience, she hopes to let others know they are "not alone," as well as "shed light" on how loved ones can help victims leave their abusers — especially during lockdown. "I understand it can be confusing and hard to know what to do," the British songwriter wrote. "The statistics on domestically abusive and interpersonal violent relationships are shocking and during covid, i have been really anxious because i know many victims will have been literally trapped with their abusers with no relief or way to get out."

While it was difficult for FKA twigs to admit she was in an abusive relationship, she revealed it would have been worse to stay silent. "my second worst nightmare is being forced to share with the world that i am a survivor of domestic violence," she said. "my first worst nightmare is not telling anyone and knowing that i could have helped even just one person by sharing my story." Before signing off, Twigs listed several organizations for victims to call if they need support.
In her suit against LaBeouf, Twigs cited several incidents of abuse, including waking up in the middle of the night to the actor choking her, being locked in a room after she attempted to leave him, and LaBeouf knowingly infecting her with a sexually transmitted disease.
