Coca-Cola Brings Back Surge Soda from the 1990s
Surge soda fans, it's your lucky day.
Coca-Cola has decided to bring back the 1990s soda Surge in limited supply after a 12 year absence. The caffeinated, citrus-flavored soda, introduced as a competitor to Mountain Dew in 1996, will return in its original glory with the same formula and packaging. The soda is available for purchase on Amazon.com and will cost $14 for a pack of 12 16-ounce cans.
According to Bloomberg, the return of Surge soda is the result of successful social media campaigning from Facebook group Surge Movement, whose efforts include spending $4,000 to fund a billboard near Coca-Cola's Atlanta headquarters asking for the soda to be brought back.
Surge Movement announced the return of the soda today, asking fans to spread the word and stating that "the Movement does NOT END HERE!"
"This will be a great learning experience for us and a refreshing opportunity for fans," said Wendy Clark, president of sparkling and strategic marking, Coca-Cola North America, in a press release. There was no mention of the quantity that will be produced. Surge will also be Coca-Cola's first launch that will only rely on social media and digital media and forgo traditional forms of advertising.
Reviews on Amazon have been very enthusiastic. One reviewer writes, "Surge is everything about my childhood that was great." Another fan shares, "I just spent 45 dollars on soda and I'm not even mad."
