Footage reveals tender moment when massive rhinos greet newborn buffalo
Sometimes you witness compassionate displays of tenderness in the unlikeliest of places.
The accompanying footage, captured in South Africa, shows several white rhinos taking turns greeting a newborn buffalo while making sure not to frighten the tiny critter.
Ether Boshoff shared the video alongside this description: “A rare and heartwarming moment in the wild: a newborn buffalo, still finding its feet, is gently greeted by a group of curious white rhinos as if to welcome it to the world.
“A beautiful reminder that kindness can come from the most unexpected places.”
White rhinos are the second-largest land mammals on the planet – elephants are the largest – and can weigh as much as 7,000 pounds.
While they can be aggressive when threatened, white rhinos are social and typically passive when they’re not defending themselves or their territories.
It’s not clear why the momma buffalo, who appears toward the end of the footage, allowed so many enormous animals to briefly surround her calf.
