Former McDonald’s Chef Reveals The Real Reason They Got Rid Of All-Day Breakfast

Right as the Covid-19 pandemic hit in March 2020, McDonald's axed all-day breakfast service. A spokesperson from McDonald's told Delish at the time that the change was to "simplify operations in the kitchen for the crew, and ensure the best possible experience for customers."

While they said the company would "regularly evaluate the situation" and planned to bring it back ASAP, all-day breakfast never returned. Plenty of fans chalked it up to the pandemic. Even employees said so on Reddit.

But now, former McDonald's chef Mike Haracz is revealing the real reason the fast food chain dropped its beloved all-day breakfast.

After a commenter mentioned the theory that the pandemic killed our 24/7 access to McGriddles and McMuffins, Haracz replied: "I bet McDonald's is happy you think the pandemic killed all-day breakfast." He added that they had been wanting to kill it long before Covid arrived.

"The issue with all-day breakfast is that it takes up the real estate in the kitchen that could be used for lunch or dinner service. There’s the UHC [Universal Holding Cabinet], there is the fryer, there is the toaster, the amount of buns that need to be available—whether it’s English muffins or biscuits or whatever," Haracz explained.

"Instead of all of the resources being used for lunch or dinner service, now you need to split that up meaning restaurant crew had to cook more food more often to replenish things in the UHC. It was what they called 'operationally complex.' Owner-operators did not want all day breakfast no matter how much you people wanted all-day breakfast," he continued.

The company and owner-operators reportedly rationalized the decision because they knew customers would "come anyway."

"A lot of McDonald’s consumers will show up, and if the thing they want or the special or the limited time offer is out, [they're] just gonna get my regular thing," he said in the TikTok video. "So no, it was not the pandemic; it was owner operators and the complexities of the restaurant. And McDonald's wanted to be as profitable as possible."

As for whether it'll ever come back, only time will tell. But based on this testimony, it's not looking good.
