French bulldog named top dog breed in US, again: Other popular breeds who made the list
The French bulldog once again reigns supreme, earning the title of most popular dog breed in the country for the third year in a row.
The American Kennel Club, the world's largest registry of purebred dogs, revealed its ranking for the most popular dog breeds of 2024 on Tuesday. The top 200 dogs were determined using the Club's registration statistics.
Frenchies lead the pack this year, followed closely by Labrador Retrievers, which were dethroned as "most popular" in 2022, with golden retrievers, German shepherds, and poodles rounding out the top five.
French Bulldogs have "surged" in popularity over the years because their "playful nature" and "compact size" make them compatible with a with a variety of lifestyles, according to the AKC. The canines were officially recognized by the AKC in 1898.
"I think, one, they're adorable … but also, I think as we do smaller living, and more people live in apartments, they're highly adaptable. They're good in small spaces," Brandi Hunter Munden, AKC communications executive, told "Good Morning America."
"They're lovebugs. They just want to be with you most of the time and I think that's what really attracts people to them," Munden added.

Although French Bulldogs have once again snagged first place, the canines in the second and third slots are also known for their friendly and affectionate demeanors.
"Goldens, we've all grown up with them. We see them all the time. They're highly adaptable. They're great with families," Munden told "Good Morning America." "They're going to go as much as you want to go, and that's really important to a lot of families, that they're great with kids and they're very gentle. They also do very well with service dogs."
Labrador retrievers, currently in second place, are known to be a little more hyperactive than goldens, requiring a little more one on one attention.
"As for labs, labs are energetic. Again, they're part of the fabric of who we are," Munden told "Good Morning America." "They are a lot of fun, they love to hike, they love to run, and they also love to cuddle, which is probably No. 1 on most people's lists."
The ranking of the canines in the top five and top 10 typically "don't shift too much," according to the American Kennel Club.
