What Is the Front Man’s Plan in ‘Squid Game’ S2? Netflix

There are few heroes in the world of Squid Game. The Netflix series takes place in a dark alternate version of South Korea where gamblers and debtors are shipped to a mysterious island to play fatal children’s games for money. Gi-hun (Lee Jung-jae) is the only true hero we have. He’s on a crusade in season 2 to stop the games for good. And his main antagonist? The leader of the games: the elusive Front Man.

Played by actor Lee Byung-hun, the Front Man complicates season 2 by removing his mask and joining the games himself. Though his motives are unclear, his actions in the finale set up an epic showdown with Gi-hun when Squid Game returns for season 3. “In season 1, I played the role of the Front Man from a more operational perspective, where he was simply the one running the games,” the actor told The Hollywood Reporter. “There’s a weird suspense to some of the conversations [he and Lee Jung-jae] have together onscreen—and it really intensifies in later moments. It’s going to be very fun for viewers to watch their relationship unfold.”

In season 2, the Front Man reveals a fair amount of his backstory. While Squid Game fans already know that he is police officer Hwang Jun-ho’s (Wi Ha-joon) older brother, not much is known about why he disappeared. Better yet, we don’t even know how he came to have such an important role in the games.

What kind of tricks does the Front Man have up his sleeve for season 3? Netflix

Jun-ho reveals a significant chunk of information early on in season 2, when he tells his mother than the Front Man was once a police officer as well. His name was In-ho, and he had a wife who died of acute cirrhosis before the events of season 1. She was also pregnant at the time, and In-ho did everything in his power to save her. He borrowed money from loan sharks. Jun-ho even donated his kidney. Still, his wife did not survive. Even worse? In-ho was fired because his superiors thought that he took a bribe from the loan sharks.

“If you think about the way his life has progressed, his worldview has to be deeply rooted in a feeling of being extremely disappointed in mankind and the world overall—that he truly feels there’s absolutely no hope in humanity,” Lee explained to Netflix. “It’s this very firm belief that drives his choices—at least that’s how I understood the character.”

Audiences will find out what’s next for the Front Man and Gi-hun when Squid Game returns for season 3 in 2025.
