"I’m a 'born in the '70s' chick, and as the years have caught up with me, losing people I love and a longing for what used to be, I started collecting more and more vintage items," Heather writes. "The front room is a maximal vintage paradise. The flower power sectional is the second couch I’ve had in the space and lends a cozy conversion pit of sorts. I bought it at a local auction house. I’ve covered the walls in a super graphic design I hand-painted, plus a collection of artwork and mirrors and knickknacks from thrifting, auctions, and gifts. "This is the original kitchen. I ripped out the grey The Home Depot tile and found some repurposed carpet tiles from a local reclamation store. The "Yellow Room" has a "bright yellow, space-age vintage design, a floating Danish teak bed, and an assortment of vintage books and complete '70s National Geographic magazines. "The room is centered around music, and vintage posters decorate the walls, along with custom-created vinyl art pieces. The vintage Drexel Plus One days of the week dresser was bought from a resale shop in Tucson, Arizona. "I love the Yellow room. It’s a happy place, and I love music so much it was fun to hunt for old posters and create an homage to Pink Floyd, AC/DC, and other bands that shaped my childhood. Heather Lynn described the 1120-square-foot home, located in a 1960s Hallcraft townhome community, that she purchased three years ago as “dreary 30-shades-of greige style with only the kitchen and bathroom retaining some original pieces.”
Unlike some who may have thought to modernize the home, Heather instead leaned into what she now calls “That ’70s Pad.” “My place is like stepping into a vintage time capsule packed with fun, nostalgic items in a space full of color, and I gave her a name to pay homage to it,” she writes. To create her colorful space, she ripped out gray carpet and The Home Depot tiles, painted over grey walls with a soft ivory color, and added some accent colors of the 1970s period like gold, orange, avocado, and brown.
"If you love it, buy it," Heather advises. "You can always find a place for it. I’m amazed at how much I’ve packed into this cozy space without feeling cluttered. I’ve also changed out the green room bed twice, and updated some space configurations along the way. That '70s Pad is a continuous evolvement of space. Everything in my place has been gifted, thrifted, estate saled, curbside free, or dumpstered. The only thing new in my place was the carpet and some towels. Her home’s maximalist style starts in a “cozy front room full of color, including a groovy flower power sofa, vintage Zenith stereo console, shag rug, and lots of old creative, vintage decor including an assortment of vintage catalogs and magazines from the ’70s.” Her home’s walls are covered in vintage artwork, and owls play a prominent role.
“The vintage kitchen is original, and I found carpet tile from a repurposing store to give its vintage look back,” she continues to describe of her groovy home. “The dinette area and kitchen were designed to include time capsule dishes, cutlery, pots/pans, bakeware, and vintage cookbooks. The cozy dinette area seats four with a cabinet full of vintage ’60s and ’70s board games and puzzles for endless hours of nostalgic entertainment. We spend much time here.”
