Ghost is alive and other Episode 4 clues revealed in new 'Game of Thrones' photos
First things first: Yes, Ghost definitely survived the Long Night. Jon Snow’s direwolf joined the frontlines in the epic Battle of Winterfell that pitted a large army of the living against an even larger army of the undead. In the chaos of the battle, not to mention the darkness of the episode, it was hard to tell whether Ghost rejoined Jon’s side. Thankfully, the preview for the fourth episode — as well as the just-released photo below — confirm that he still walks among the living.
If you zoom in on the right side of the frame and find Samwell Tarly, you’ll also find Ghost just behind him — part of an assembly of survivors surveying the damage done by the Night King’s forces. (He’s a bit easier to spot in this image from the trailer.)
Daenerys’s Dothraki followers are high on the list of casualties. They were the first to ride into battle against the White Walkers, and even though firestarter Melisandre lit up their blades, it wasn’t enough to beat back the lethal tidal wave of death that crashed on Winterfell.
Arya single-handedly — make that double-handedly — brought an end to the Night King’s reign of terror, but it looks like a black eye will have to serve as her medal of honor. After all, Daenerys isn’t all too fond of the Starks right now, between Sansa’s disinterest in pledging fealty to another ruler and Jon’s newly-discovered Targaryen heritage.
At least she’s still got Drogon on her side. Mother and son’s grins probably have something to do with the fact that Rhaegal survived what appeared to be a fatal crash-landing during the battle. Sadly, with the Night King’s defeat, their brother Viserion is dead... again.
Now that the Night King is in her rearview, Daenerys is looking ahead towards Cersei Lannister. Rather than engaging in guerrilla warfare, her war plan is a bold naval assault on King’s Landing.
The Targaryen fleet is certainly impressive. Although you know that Daenerys herself prefers air travel.
But no matter how many ships she brings, she’s unlikely to scare Cersei or her right-hand man, Euron Greyjoy. The Iron Throne’s current occupant looks entirely non-plussed by the looming battle. Honestly, Dany is the one who should probably be unnerved, since a smiling Cersei is a deadly Cersei. Just ask anyone unlucky enough to be in the Sept of Baelor.
In preparation for the Battle of King’s Landing, oddsmakers are taking new bets on who will be the next to join Jorah and Lyanna Mormont — as well as Melisandre, Theon, Beric and Dolorous Edd — six feet under. Right at the top are the Clegane boys, Gregor and Sandor, whose sibling rivalry is destined to end in bloody fashion. Grey Worm, who many expected not to make it out of Winterfell alive, is also high on the list of anticipated deaths.
As for who ends up on the Iron Throne, BetOnline is betting on Jon Snow being the one to wear the crown... whether he wants it or not. (Based on his glum expression, we’re guessing not.) Meanwhile, Jaime Lannister is the oddsmakers’ favorite for taking our Cersei once and for all. They must not trust Melisandre’s expert optometry opinions.
Game of Thrones airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on HBO.
