Garth Brooks' Famous Breakfast Bowl Couldn’t Be More Unhinged
But we’re all for it.
As much as we love the songs that have come out of country music duo Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood, it’s possible we love the recipes even more.
Through 17 seasons of her Emmy-winning Food Network cooking show, Yearwood has showcased hundreds of delicious and down-home Southern recipes, many of which were inspired by her Hall-of-Fame husband.
One recipe in particular has gained fame for being uniquely Garth. It’s a meaty, cheesy monstrosity of a meal, fit for one very hungry Rodeo Man.
Garth Brooks’ Signature Breakfast Bowl
Garth Brooks’ breakfast bowl is five pounds of pure brunch bliss. It’s probably large enough to be considered a breakfast casserole, but perhaps to someone with a really big appetite, it could be classified as a “bowl.” The dish is layered up with every breakfast element you could dream of—plus a delicious wild card addition: tortellini pasta.
Here’s what's inside: a pound of pork sausage, a pound of bacon, eight eggs, two and a half cups of cheese, a package of frozen tater tots, and—wait for it—an entire bag of cheese and garlic tortellini. It sounds so crazy, it might just work.
The bowl is easy to make—all you have to do is prepare the separate parts (cook the eggs, sausage, hashbrowns, etc.) and layer them together. It’s also super customizable; you can swap in any kind of meat or cheese you prefer, toss in veggies, or top with your favorite hot sauce.
Apparently, Brooks cooks up this bowl (or “compilation,” as Yearwood calls it) often for breakfast or dinner. In fact, it has officially replaced the breakfast casserole on the table on holiday mornings. “To add insult to injury, I started topping it with sausage gravy—it’s even more decadent that way!” Yearwood shared with People.
So, what’s with the tortellini? It’s the signature Garth Brooks twist. “That’s my husband,” Yearwood told People in an interview. “It’s almost a joke in our family because he’ll come along with any dish and be like, ‘Why don’t you add tortellini to that?'”
She’s not kidding–it’s even made its way into her Country Quiche recipe.
“I stopped telling him he’s crazy because everything he’s suggested that I add tortellini to has been great,” Yearwood shared. “Letting him near a cookie recipe with tortellini would be a mistake, but otherwise I’m open to suggestions."
How to Make Garth Brooks’ Breakfast Bowl
2 tablespoons butter
8 large eggs
1 16-ounce bag frozen hash browns, such as Tater Tots, thawed
1 pound pork sausage
1 pound bacon
1 9-ounce package cheese and roasted garlic tortellini
10 ounces sharp Cheddar, grated (about 2 1/2 cups)
In a large skillet over medium-low, melt the butter and scramble the eggs.
In a separate large skillet, cook the hash browns according to package directions.
In a third skillet, break up the sausage with a wooden spoon and cook until browned. Remove with a slotted spoon and transfer to a bowl. Cook the bacon in the same skillet until crispy, drain it on paper towels, and tear it into pieces.
Prepare a large pot of boiling water, then cook the tortellini according to the package directions. Layer the hash browns, sausage, bacon, tortellini, eggs, and cheese in a large bowl and serve immediately.
