Giambattista Valli Goes Sartorial in the City for Pre-fall 2025

Giambattista Valli offered an eclectic and versatile collection for pre-fall meant to take a woman from daytime to the evening, staying polished throughout.

Rather than cast his eye far afield for inspiration, the designer hewed closer to home by rooting the season in the realities of life in the city — and of a contemporary woman’s wardrobe.

“Of course, there is fantasy in pre-fall pieces but each is an item that has to fit in with other ones” — be they his or from different designers — he said.

More than ever, Valli was adamant that “comfort is the chicest thing” for that busy woman who transitions from school drop-offs to the boardroom before a night on the town.

Tailoring was a fresh direction Valli leaned into, plying masculine staples and sartorial fabrics into a touch of boyish charm. A gray jacket with gold buttons paired with a silk lavallière blouse and wide-legged jeans epitomized the unfussy yet polished look he intended.

More glamorous materials were whipped into flattering options like a sequined blazer, popped over a gray shirt and tailored shorts set, or a champagne-gold crocodile print eco-leather, cut into a long jacket with patch pockets and cropped flared trousers. (It also came in black, for the less daring.)

That’s not to say delicate florals were left behind, used to great effect for cold-shoulder dresses in floaty embroidered tulle and printed tea-length numbers, but also applied to a chunky marled gray sweater.

Completing the lineup was the kind of footwear that belied the idea that flats — loafers or ballet pumps — are cop-out options. The former came with a metal bow curving over the toecap, while the latter were zhuzhed up with a crystallized heart.
