Nothing brightens up a room quite like flowers. But when it comes to aesthetics, the devil's in the details, and a grimy-looking vase can really spoil the overall look.

When your flowers are ready for the garden waste, here is the best way to give your vase a proper clean.

Can you put a glass vase in the dishwasher?

Unless the vase is gilded, there’s nothing to stop you giving it a run-through in your next dishwasher cycle. But if the vase is too precious for that, fill it with hot water, drop in a dishwasher tab, stir and leave overnight. Rinse thoroughly. This should remove 99 per cent of dirt.

Don’t put glass vases in the dishwasher too regularly, or you run the risk of it going cloudy.

Do you live in a hard water area?

If you do, your glasses and vases may look cloudier than they would do otherwise. To find out, pop your postcode into AquaCure's hard water checker.

Here are your two options if your favourite glass vase is getting misted up with hard water deposits:

  1. Buy a limescale remover and follow packet instructions

  2. Or, if you want to use something you'll already have round the house, fill the vase with distilled white vinegar and leave to soak overnight. If the vase is still marked, add a handful of rice to the vinegar, swill it around vigorously, then rinse with hot soapy water and dry with a clean cloth.
