Golden Globes 2024: 20 of the best and worst red carpet outfits of all time
From Viola Davis serving "African royalty" to Lara Flynn Boyle's infamous ballerina-inspired dress.
The Golden Globes are here to kick-off to the 2024 awards season!
The awards show will air at 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan.7 on CBS and the Paramount+ app. Canadian viewers can catch the star-studded ceremony on CityTV and its streaming service the CityTV+ app, or watch the awards show on Amazon Prime by adding CityTV+ as a channel for $4.99 CAD.
Comedian Jo Koy will serve as host with A-list stars such as Ben Affleck, Jared Leto and Kate Beckinsale as presenters.
In honour of the upcoming Golden Globe Awards, we're looking back at some of the most jaw-dropping (both good and bad) looks to ever grace the awards show over the years.
Best: Anya Taylor-Joy (2021)
Does Law Roach ever miss? The American fashion stylist — known for working with stars like Celine Dion, Zendaya and Ariana Grande — gave "The Menu" star Anya Taylor-Joy an emerald green Dior gown for the 78th Golden Globes. Unfortunately, the world was robbed of seeing the "Queen's Gambit" actress's legendary look on an official red carpet since she attended the 2021 ceremony virtually.
Worst: Cameron Diaz (1999)
We're not really sure what's happening here. In 1999, Cameron Diaz stepped out for the 56th Golden Globes wearing a baby pink kimono-inspired off-the-shoulder wrap that could probably double as a Taco Bell costume. You'd just have to imagine the black wide-leg trousers as a black bean filling and ignore the confusing assortment of accessories.
Best: Michelle Yeoh (2019)
We promise we're not only praising celebrities who chose to wore emerald green for the Golden Globes. But any list that excludes "Everything Everywhere All At Once" star Michelle Yeoh's sequinned Shiatzy Chen leather gown from 2019 is criminal. For the 76th Golden Globe Awards, the "Crazy Rich Asians" actress paired the stunning dress with the sparkling emerald ring her character wore in the blockbuster film.
Worst: Margot Robbie (2021)
The Golden Globes were once known as Hollywood's biggest party. But nowadays, some people might consider awards shows to be obsolete or boring. Still, walking the red carpet wearing something you might've grabbed off the rack at the nearby mall an hour before the event is brave. Sometimes it works, but Margot Robbie was giving "pedestrian" wearing Chanel in 2021 for the 78th Golden Globes.
Best: Jennifer Lopez (2013)
When you're the top-searched Golden Globes red carpet star, you can't show up and disappoint. While Jennifer Lopez didn't see any nominations in 2013 for the 70th Golden Globe Awards, the "Marry Me" actress was tapped as a presenter. Thankfully, mind you, or else we wouldn't have seen J.Lo rock this stunning Zuhair Murad sheer gown, featuring an open back and gorgeous lace.
Worst: Kristen Wiig (2021)
We certainly appreciate a bold red carpet look, but Kristen Wiig's mint green strapless mini dress for the 78th Golden Globes was ... a choice. The Prada babydoll dress featured green bows and an embellished neckline, but the silhouette swallowed the "Saturday Night Live" star up in 2021. At least the comedian swapped the look out for a pair of sparkly pink culottes as she took the stage to present an award.
Best: Viola Davis (2021)
In 2021, Viola Davis wanted a designer for the 78th Golden Globe Awards who "spoke to her specifically as a Black woman," stylist Elizabeth Stewart told British Vogue, adding that "her look is all about rethinking glamour and couture on the red carpet in the age of diversity and inclusivity." Davis's vibrant fishtail Lavie by CK gown was designed by Cameroon-born, Los Angeles-based designer Claude Kameni.
Worst: Emma Watson (2014)
With the mullet seeing a resurgence in popularity over the past few years, you might've also heard the saying, "business in the front, party in the back." But Emma Watson's short-sleeve bright red Dior gown for the 71st Golden Globes was far from that. In 2014, the "Harry Potter" star's dress featured a thigh-high slit in the front, as well as a completely open back showing off black pants and navy blue heels.
Best: Julia Roberts (1991)
There's something about Julia Roberts that's so likeable and warm, an energy that's perfectly captured at the 48th Golden Globe Awards in 1991. Following a best actress win for her role as Vivian Ward in "Pretty Woman," Roberts flashed her infectious smile while wearing an oversized navy blue pinstripe blazer, a matching skirt, black tights and effortlessly tousled hair.
Worst: Sharon Stone (2003)
From one angle, Sharon Stone's all-black frock and strappy pointed boots might pass as something ahead of its time. But truthfully, the "Flight Attendant" actress heavily missed the mark in 2003 during the 60th Golden Globes. Too much is happening in this bewitched Versace ensemble, making the star look like she's wearing a Bayonetta costume that was just torn to shreds by wild animals.
Best: Amanda Seyfried (2021)
Amanda Seyfried turned heads (virtually) at the 78th Golden Globe Awards with a coral pink Oscar de la Renta sorbet gown embroidered with taffeta pressed flowers. But the evening nearly turned into a major fiasco for the "Dropout" actress, after the dress went missing for 36 hours. Travelling from New York, the silk dress eventually made its way to Seyfried in Savannah, Ga. in "the nick of time," said stylist Elizabeth Stewart.
Worst: Sarah Jessica Parker (2004)
Dresses with a high-low hem can sometimes be almost passable, but Sarah Jessica Parker's Chanel gown for the 61st Golden Globes was a miss. With a dress that appears to be purple-grey and ribbon-topped heels the shade of a sad blue, you would think cameras in the early 2000s couldn't capture saturated colours. But after winning both a Golden Globe and Emmy in 2004 for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in "Sex and the City," who's really laughing?
Best: Lily Collins (2021)
It's honestly kind of difficult picturing the star of "Emily in Paris" missing the mark when it comes to fashion. For the 78th Golden Globe Awards, it appeared that Lily Collins grabbed a stunning piece right out of Emily Cooper's closet in France. Tuning in virtually for the 2021 ceremony, the Golden Globe-nominated actress had viewers glued to the screen as she wore a colourful one-shoulder paisley Saint Laurent gown.
Worst: Shonda Rhimes (2007)
There are some things in the world you should just never mix. From milk and Red Bull, to bleach and ammonia, you can create some dangerous situations by trying to combine things that should be left alone. Unfortunately, Shonda Rhimes didn't seem to get that memo when she wore a floral print trench coat gown at the 64th Golden Globes in 2007.
Best: Billy Porter (2020)
When it comes to fashion, there's nothing more boring than a man stepping foot on a red carpet wearing a black tuxedo. Thankfully, we can rely on "Pose" star Billy Porter for turning out a show at these events. For the 77th Golden Globes in 2020, Porter rocked a white tuxedo with a removable angel wing train designed by Alex Vinash, along with sparkling Jimmy Choo boots and jewelry from Tiffany & Co.
Worst: Jennifer Lawrence (2014)
When your high-fashion red carpet gown inspires countless internet memes, it's safe to say someone might've made a mistake. Jennifer Lawrence stepped out on the red carpet for the 71st Golden Globes in 2014 wearing a simple white strapless Dior gown, embellished with two plain black stripes. But could no one foresee how many people would recreate the piece with a duvet and black tape?
Best: Lady Gaga (2019)
Lady Gaga left people stunned in 2019, after walking the 76th Golden Globes red carpet wearing a periwinkle blue Valentino gown. Featuring a 10-foot-long train, it was a subtle tribute to Judy Garland's performance in 1954's "A Star is Born." Gaga apparently left the dress inside her Beverly Hilton hotel room the day after the event. A maid discovered the piece and eventually put it up for auction, where it was pulled offline minutes before selling for a $19,000 bid.
Worst: Diane Kruger (2005)
For Diane Kruger to wear this Marchesa piece for her first-ever Golden Globes in 2005, you'd think her planner would say "raiding a tomb for treasure at 7 p.m.; 62nd Golden Globe Awards at 8 p.m." The "355" actress even said it herself: "I loved the dress they made but it was so wrong for that occasion," she told Stylist magazine. "You could see my bellybutton and everybody else was in long, flowy gowns."
Best: Beyoncé (2020)
This list would be incomplete without the iconic Queen B. For the 77th Golden Globe Awards in 2020, Beyoncé notably skipped the red carpet, arriving mid-ceremony with her husband, Jay-Z. Celebrating her nomination for "The Lion King," Beyoncé rocked a jaw-dropping black silk Schiaparelli dress, with larger-than-life woven gold mesh sleeves that drew all the focus to her gorgeous face.
Worst: Lara Flynn Boyle (2003)
The infamous David Cardona-designed ballerina dress worn by Lara Flynn Boyle in 2003 for the 60th Golden Globe Awards truly speaks for itself.
