Greta Gerwig has opened up about being snubbed from the Best Director category in this year's Academy Awards nominations.

Speaking to Time, the Barbie director said: 'A friend’s mum said to me, "I can’t believe you didn’t get nominated." I said, "But I did. I got an Oscar nomination." She was like, "Oh, that’s wonderful for you!" I was like, "I know!"'

Barbie, which is nominated for eight Oscars, was largely snubbed from the most coveted categories it was expected to be acknowledged in. Gerwig failed to receive a nomination for Best Director, as was widely expected would be the case, but was named alongside her husband, Noah Baumbach, for Best Adapted Screenplay. Meanwhile, Margot Robbie lost out on a Best Actress nomination, but was recognised for Best Picture as a producer under her company LuckyChap Productions, which she co-founded with her husband Tom Ackerley.

Gerwig told the publication, 'Of course I wanted it for Margot. But I’m just happy we all get to be there together.'

The day after the nominations were announced in January 2024, Barbie star Ryan Gosling, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor, released a statement in which he expressed disappointment over Gerwig and Robbie’s snubs. Gosling said he was ‘honoured’ to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor for ‘portraying a plastic doll named Ken’. ‘But there is no Ken without Barbie, and there is no Barbie movie without Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie.’

His Barbie co-star America Ferreira echoed Gosling’s sentiments in an interview with Variety. She said that she was ‘incredibly disappointed’ that Robbie and Gerwig had failed to receive nominations in the Best Actress and Best Director categories. ‘What Margot achieved as an actress is truly unbelievable,’ she said, adding that Gerwig had done ‘just about everything that a director could do to deserve it’.

During a Sag-Aftra panel on February 1, Robbie said ‘there’s no way to feel sad when you know you’re this blessed’, but defended Gerwig.

‘Obviously, I think Greta should be nominated as a director. What she did is a once-in-a-career, once-in-a-lifetime thing. What she pulled off, it really is. But it’s been an incredible year for all the films,’ Robbie said. ‘We set out to do something that would shift culture, affect culture, just make some sort of impact, and it’s already done that and some, way more than we ever dreamed it would. That is truly the biggest reward that could come out of all of this.’

Once the Oscars have wrapped, Gerwig will turn her attention to working on a new adaptation of the first book in C.S. Lewis’ Chronicles of Narnia series.
