Gwendoline Christie is one of the best new additions to Severance season 2. The former Game of Thrones actress—who played the headstrong knight Brienne of Tarth—joins the Apple TV+ workplace thriller as a goat herder named Lush. Not much is known about why Lumon Industries employs goat breeders, but Severance fans sure have their theories. With a little help from Christie’s new character, we might just arrive at some answers.

The animal caretakers were first introduced back in season 1, episode 5, when Mark S. (Adam Scott) and Helly R. (Britt Lower) found a room full of baby goats. When the pair entered the room last season, a mysterious man yelled at them to leave. “They’re not ready yet!” he screamed. “It isn’t time!” Until season 2, episode 3, Mark had yet to return to the room to learn more about the goats.

That all changes this week. Mark tells Helly that it’s finally time to “find the goat man and other possible goat people.” And oh brother, do they find the goat people.

What Is the Mammalians Nurturable Room?

When Mark and Helly enter the Mammalians Nurturable department, they find Gwendoline Christie’s character, Lush, standing in the middle of a large green pasture. “Are you here to kill me?” she asks. No, the duo from Macrodata Refinement is just looking for Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman). Eventually, Lush tells them that Ms. Casey “used to come do her sessions in our husbandry tanks,” but she’s not here. The search continues.

Thankfully, there’s no shortage of bizarre goings-on to keep us interested in Mammalians Nurturable. Some employees wear horned hats, while other dirtied Lumon farmers seem totally hypnotised. At first, I assumed the man from the first season wasn’t severed when he shooed Mark and Helly away from the goat room. Strangely, season 2 confirms that the goat breeders are severed employees as well. At least Mark sits at a desk and files away scary numbers. Imagine if your severed job was raising goats! Even worse, are their Outies even aware of the nature of their work at Lumon?

Before Mark and Helly leave, Lush makes one last, puzzling request. She wants to see their belly buttons. “See?” Lush says to the group after they show her their stomachs. “Pouchless.” Pouchless? “Proves nothing,” another employee grumbles. I’m sorry, but what?! Do the goat breeders not have belly buttons? Is it possible that having a “pouch” means that you’re pregnant to these Innies? We finally see the goat room, and it opens up a whole new rabbit hole.
