If You Haven’t Steen ‘Anora’ Yet, What Are You Doing?
Anora is not your typical awards-season contender. Directed by Sean Baker, the new film follows a young sex worker named Anora—played by the extraordinary Mikey Madison—who falls head over heels for the son of a Russian oligarch. It’s a whirlwind romance, until Anora’s powerful new in-laws find out what their son’s been up to away from home. Naturally, it’s pure chaos from there on out.
Earlier this spring, Anora took home the coveted Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. While the award doesn’t mean success at the Oscars is soon to follow, films such as Parasite, Triangle of Sadness, and Anatomy of a Fall are among some of the French film festival’s recent winners as well. Anora then went on to garner five nominations at the 82nd Annual Golden Globe Awards, eventually walking away empty-handed, and six nominations at this year’s Academy Awards, including best picture.
As Madison told Esquire US last August, Baker contacted her after her performance in the 2022 Scream reboot. He told her he was enamored with her performance and wanted to write the role in Anora specifically with her in mind. “It’s not a relationship I’ve ever had before,” she said of working with the director. “I think we were just really in tune with each other in terms of the comedy and where the character was going.… I think it changed the relationship, going into the film where we were willing to just try things and take risks.”
How Can I Watch Anora?
While Anora is not available on any streaming services just yet, you can digitally purchase the film for £11.99 on Sky Store. Neon has yet to confirm an official release date on streaming services, but it's still available in cinemas. Hopefully, audiences will be able to stream Anora from home before the Oscars.
“I’m just so happy that people have been loving the film and that it’s going to be shown in a much broader way than I ever could have anticipated,” Madison told Screen Rant before the Globes. “I get to go to all these amazing countries and show our film in different languages. It’s been a dream come true.”
