Helena Bonham Carter Doesn't Think The Crown Should Continue
The hit Netflix drama The Crown has been slated to return for a sixth and final season for quite some time, but at least one former cast member disagrees with that decision. Helena Bonham Carter, who took over the role of Queen Elizabeth's younger sister Princess Margaret in the period drama's third and fourth seasons, said in a recent interview with The Guardian that she thinks the show should end now that they've reached the modern era.
"I should be careful here too, but I don’t think they should carry on, actually," the actress told the publication. "I’m in it and I loved my episodes, but it’s very different now. When The Crown started it was a historic drama, and now it’s crashed into the present. But that’s up to them."
The statement came on the heels of a circumspect response about Prince Harry's much-talked-about memoir, Spare. "I don’t really want to contribute to the whole thing," she said. "It’s complicated and it’ll get taken out of context. And I think it’s been given enough attention."
Despite its continued popularity and critical acclaim (the show received four Golden Globe nominations for its fifth season, including for Best Drama Series) controversy has followed The Crown's more recent seasons. A number of prominent figures, including iconic British actress Dame Judi Dench, have called for the show to add a disclaimer to each episode explaining that it is a work of fiction. Bonham Carter herself weighed in on the issue in 2020, telling The Crown: The Official Podcast, "I do feel very strongly because I think we have a moral responsibility to say hang on guys, it's not a drama doc, we're making a drama. They are different entities."
