Grace Van Patten And Jackson White Reflect On Shocking 'Tell Me Lies' Season 2 Finale

For the uninitiated, Tell Me Lies tells the story of the toxic relationship between two college students, Lucy (Grace Van Patten) and Stephen (Jackson White). The pair first meet during the first weeks of Lucy's freshman year at the fictional Baird College, with the couple whose relationship eventually becomes a years-long on-again, off-again romance, with each of them cheating on other partners at various points along the way. The series comes with a ready-made fanbase too, having been based on Carola Lovering's bestselling novel of the same name.

Has 'Tell Me Lies' been renewed for a third season?
At the time of writing, Tell Me Lies has not yet been renewed for a third season, and Hulu has kept the show's future secret, although given its runaway success we can't imagine a third outing of the show not being on the cards.
One month after its inaugural season aired in October 2022, the show was officially renewed for a second series so it may well be that we hear the good news of a third season once the second series' finale episode has aired on October 16.
What would 'Tell Me Lies' season 3 be about?
While the season is based on Lovering's novel, Tell Me Lies' creator and executive producer Meaghan Oppenheimer previously confirmed in a recent interview that the second season's plot has been expanded upon beyond the storyline of the book.
That suggests that season three may well take more creative license over the book's plot, and perhaps would show fans what happens after the cast reunites for Bree's (Catherine Missal) wedding.
Grace Van Patten and Jackson White, who play Lucy and Stephen respectively in the show, have addressed the shock around the end of season two of their hit show. The second season was certainly a more sinister exploration of the college group of friends' dramatic lives, with a second finale episode that saw Wrigley's brother Drew's passing, Oliver's open marriage news, Diana's split from Stephen and Stephen dropping the mother of all bombshells at Evan and Bree's wedding in the 2015 wedding flash forward.
Since the finale of season two aired, Van Patten told The Hollywood Reporter that she 'really couldn’t believe' what Stephen did in those final few moments of the season. 'I’m so curious what would be in [showrunner] Meaghan [Oppenheimer’s] head for a third season and what the rest of that wedding would look like,' she said.
White called Stephen's actions (ie sharing a recording of Evan revealing he'd slept with Lucy from eight years prior) at the end of the episode 'psychotic'. Addressing beliefs that Stephen is out for himself, he added: 'He’s in a lot of fear. He’s just so afraid of losing and not ending up on top. And so he reacts accordingly, and he tries to manipulate everything with a goal in mind. He’s a very goal-oriented kind of person.'
Who would be cast in 'Tell Me Lies' season 3?
It simply wouldn't be Tell Me Lies without Lucy and Stephen, meaning that Grace Van Patten and Jackson White can be expected to return. It also seems likely that the show would be able to continue without Catherine Missal, Sonia Mena, Alicia Crowder, Branden Cook, and Spencer House.
Looking ahead to season three, Van Patten told THR of her hopes for Lucy: 'What I hope for the character is time alone, but for the show and for drama purposes (laughs), I hope they keep going at it. But human Lucy, to me, I wish she would just leave Stephen and figure herself out.'
White added of Stephen: 'I wonder if it would be cool to see Stephen completely stuck with nowhere to run to, nowhere to go. I don’t even know what that means, like no method of manipulating his way out of something. And then also, Meaghan said that there was an idea of a threesome with Wrigley and if that came up, I wouldn’t push against it. But we’ll see, fingers crossed.'
When will 'Tell Me Lies' season 3 be released?
While Tell Me Lies season three hasn't even be confirmed — let alone had a release date announced — it can be assumed that it will follow the same calendar that the first two seasons have. If a third season is confirmed this year, or in the first few months of 2025, then fans can expect to see the new season in the autumn of 2026.
