Here's How to Wear the Tweed Trend From Head to Toe

A new academic year innately brings a yearning for preppy fashion (blame the "Gossip Girl" re-runs), be it fall favorites like studious loafers or a new work handbag, and this year, one preppy staple seems to be at the top of everyone's minds: tweed.

Tweed originated in Scotland in the 1800's (the name "tweed" is said to have originated from a misreading of "tweel", meaning "twill," the type of weave, on a clothing tag) as a popular textile for men's workwear. That is, until the 1920's, when Coco Chanel began creating tailored tweed pieces for women as well. Her coveted tweed suits were revolutionary to women's fashion and the reason why the French house reigns as the purveyor of tweed.

Today, tweed (not to be confused with twee, although tweed can indeed be twee) is a sophisticated staple in fashion, known for its polished and structured look. Once representative of status, textured twilled fabric has maintained its regal effect, on par with the "silent luxury" trend and was featured across several designer Fall and Winter 2024 collections, including Chanel, Stella McCartney, Dior, Anna Sui, Thom Browne and plenty more.
