This Historic $10.8 Million Cotswolds Manor Has Ties to Henry VIII
It doesn’t get much more classic English country house than this idyllic manor in the Cotswolds. Near the ancient town of Minchinhampton, about 100 miles west of London in the mostly rural county of Gloucestershire, a storied estate known as The Lammas has hit the market for the first time in nearly 40 years. The Grade II-listed property is asking a cool £8.5 million (or about $10.8 million) and is being represented by both Savills and Knight Frank.
The palatial spread, which dates back quite a few centuries, has a lengthy history under its belt. Most notably, it was previously owned by William the Conqueror, Henry VIII, and William de la Pole, Earl of Suffolk. More recently, in the ’80s, it belonged to the late Lord Catto, a British businessman, banker, and former director of Times Newspapers.

Set on over five wooded acres, the Georgian abode is surrounded by gorgeous walled gardens. The grounds are marked with a variety of trees, ample shrubbery, and plenty of color. In fact, the garden has been designed to change hues according to the season. There’s also a fenced-in pond and a hard tennis court.
“Few historic homes are as impeccably presented and as conveniently located as The Lammas,” said Plum Fenton with Savills. Altogether, the property offers a 10-bedroom main house, a two-bedroom cottage, a coach house, and stables. In terms of modern comforts, you’ll find an indoor swimming pool, a sauna, a wine cellar, and a historic tithe barn with a vaulted ceiling for entertaining.
Despite its age, the principal pad is far from dated. Instead, the residence embodies classic English country house aesthetics, with its large sash windows, classical fireplaces, and stately columns, all in concert with modern creature comfort. The ground floor holds a dramatic drawing room, a formal dining area, and an open-plan kitchen, while the second-floor principal suite is decked out with a matching pair of walk-in closets and its own study overlooking the countryside.
“The Lammas is unique: a beautiful, listed Georgian house in secluded, private grounds and yet within walking distance of Minchinhampton’s shops,” added Knight Frank’s Rupert Sweeting. “It will suit any number of buyers, from those with a young family wanting their children to go to Beaudesert School to those wanting less land and close proximity to a large village.”
