‘Hollywood Con Queen’ Docuseries Set At Apple

Apple is turning the story of the Hollywood con queen into a documentary series.

The streamer is launching Hollywood Con Queen, which tells the story of a scam that targeted the likes of Kathleen Kennedy, Sherry Lansing, Amy Pascal, Wendi Deng Murdoch and Stacey Snider, on May 8.

The series comes from Tiger King and Fyre filmmaker Chris Smith and his production company Library Films.

It tells the story of an international con artist impersonating the industry’s most powerful women.

The scam involved the con artist approaching production staff, claiming to be an executive or senior figure in the industry, to work on a project in Indonesia. In 2020, it emerged that the FBI and Department of Justice had arrested a suspect in Manchester, UK.

The series is based on the reporting of Scott Johnson, who wrote a book – Hollywood Con Queen: The Hunt for an Evil Genius.

It is the latest project based on the con queen scam; Campside Media launched a successful podcast, Chameleon: Hollywood Con Queen in 2020 and there have been a number of other projects in the works based on the story. Deadline broke the story of the scam back in 2018, in a detailed report that laid out how victims were being conned out of money, with a caller purporting to be one of the famous Hollywood women developing relationships by phone with former Navy SEALs and others, and offering them dream opportunities. We ran that story to warn the next prospective victims, and the story mushroomed from there.
