Christmas is just around the corner, and the search for ways to infuse homes with holiday spirit is at an all-time high — searches for 'Christmas potpourri' surged by 960 per cent last month. We've turned to Craig Wilson, founder of online garden retailer Gardener’s Dream, for his expert tips on creating DIY Christmas potpourri. Not only is it budget-friendly, but it’s a sustainable way to keep your home smelling merry and bright all season long.

Here’s how to turn kitchen scraps into a fragrant holiday masterpiece:

Start with citrus peels

'Oranges, lemons, and grapefruits are holiday staples,' says Craig. Save the peels and dry them out. Their natural oils release a fresh, zesty scent that pairs perfectly with festive spices. Use an air fryer's dehydration setting or bake them on low heat in the oven for quicker results.

Repurpose apple skins and cores

Apple pies and crumbles may be seasonal favourites, but their leftovers are just as valuable. 'Dried apple slices, peels, and cores add a subtly sweet fragrance to potpourri,' says Craig. Dust them with cinnamon before drying for an enhanced holiday aroma.

Add festive spices

Got leftover cinnamon sticks or cloves? Craig says old spices like nutmeg, star anise, and cloves release their scent gradually, giving your potpourri a nostalgic and long-lasting fragrance.

Include herbs and evergreen trimmings

Spare a few sprigs of rosemary or bay leaves from your Christmas cooking. Dry them out to add a forest-like freshness to your mix. Dried fir branches or pine needles are perfect for that authentic Christmas touch.

Boost with essential oils

Craig recommends adding a few drops of essential oils like cinnamon or sweet orange if your potpourri needs a refresh. This boosts the overall aroma and makes the potpourri last longer.

Mix and display

Combine your dried ingredients in a decorative bowl, jar, or muslin sachet for a festive touch that smells as good as it looks. It's perfect for gifting or sprucing up every corner of your home.

With these tips, you’ll fill your home with festive cheer – all for little cost!
