Home of the Week: This $18.5 Million Alpine Retreat in Telluride Blends Right Into the Mountainside
This architecturally savvy residence within Telluride’s private, high-alpine community called Gray Head eschews the traditional log cabin style found throughout Colorado in favor of art-forward design. And now the home can be yours for $18.5 million.
Built in 2008, the property is called Pa Gomo, which means ‘on the mountain’ in Shana, a South African dialect; that makes perfect sense, as the property is situated on 35 acres at the base of Hawn Mountain. The original owners, who purchased the land for $2 million, tapped Jack Snow of RKD Architects to create a work of art rather than your typical mountain home. The firm, according to its website, has designed homes around the country, from California to Minnesota and Colorado to New Jersey. It’s known for a contemporary and environmentally friendly approach to design, and Pa Gomo is no exception, with its pod-like stone structures connected seamlessly across nearly 10,400 square feet.

Designed to blend in with the natural landscape, the home is full of clean lines and constructed with stones harvested from the site. Despite the heavy stone facade, it’s juxtaposed with lighter elements, such as sloped walls of glass, curved roof elements, and beautiful interactions that bring the outdoors in. Inside, there’s a sense of levity thanks to suspended wood beams that float through the air, overhead skylights, sun-drenched rooms, and soaring ceilings.
Sitting over a wild Aspen grove, the five-bedroom, seven-bathroom home is configured of connected pods, offering privacy and serenity in each bedroom and communal living space. There’s also a glass-walled interior hallway/bridge that floats over a pond, which connects the primary bedroom to the living spaces, kitchen, and dining area. From the outside, the home blends within the natural landscape; but from the interiors, it feels like you’re one with the outdoors. Each room is nearly encircled by floor-to-ceiling glass windows, and because it’s built over the hillside terrain, several rooms seem to float above the landscape.
Pa Gomo has an Amangiri-esque sensibility with natural tones, earthy textures, calming energy, flowing indoor-outdoor spaces, and architecture inspired by the surrounding mountains and alpine lifestyle. Though unlike a hotel, each room was personalized to the owners’ lifestyle. For example, the kitchen, with double-height ceilings, sculptural bow trusses, and exposed wood beams, was designed for ultimate entertaining with two large kitchen islands, a food-preparation area, two dishwashers, barstools, and a TV that pops out of a mahogany cabinet.
The primary bedroom is situated in its own wing of the house, while the additional ensuite bedrooms are filtered throughout the rest of the structure. Amenities include a gym, movie theater, outdoor patios, reading alcoves and lounge areas, and an office. As for the 35-acre surrounding landscape, it features alpine grasses, ponds, flower, moss, and wildflowers. The biggest draw is, of course, the views, and the elevated property overlooks Wilson Peak, Sunshine Mountain, and Lizard Head, all part of the San Juan Mountain Range. The home is listed by Rick Fusting of LIV Sotheby’s International Realty.
