Home of the Week: Inside a Prized $30 Million Estate in the Hamptons
The Hamptons is a perennial favorite vacation destination among billionaires, A-listers, and the world’s most stylish jet-setters. Of the many towns, villages and hamlets that comprise the Hamptons, Southampton is one of the largest and oldest, not to mention one of the most expensive zip codes in the country, with no shortage of newly constructed modern mansions and stately historic homes.
Despite Southampton’s multitude of impressive residences, many with impressive pedigrees, it’s rare that a home of such prestige as the Atterbury Estate comes to market—until now. Built in 1912 by renowned architect Grosvenor Atterbury, the sprawling compound is now available for $30 million and presents a once-in-a-generation opportunity for those seeking a trophy estate in the heart of one of the world’s most renowned summer resort communities. Atterbury was an accomplished American architect who designed the American wing of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, along with projects with John D. Rockefeller, Jr., and numerous homes in the Hamptons. Atterbury Estate, now more than 100 years old, has had many lives. The property spans nearly 30 acres and includes two parcels, 409 Montauk Highway and 369 Montauk Highway. One parcel spans 14.68 acres and features the main residence, a carriage house, garage, greenhouse, pool, pool house, and tennis court. Meanwhile, the neighboring 15.18-acre parcel is undeveloped with rolling hills and wooded land—a sure barrier from prying eyes.
Francesco Galesi purchased the home in 2003 and completed a renovation in 2009. It was recently put on the market for the first time in 21 years. Entered via private gates and a winding tree-lined driveway, the estate is exceptionally private and secluded. A cobblestone driveway, complete with a Venetian-style fountain, and a porte cochère front the white stucco-clad main residence. The home has plenty of room, with 12 bedrooms and 10 bathrooms in about 12,600 square feet.
Of particular note, the mature landscaping was designed by Fredrick Olmsted, considered the father of American landscape architecture, who helped design the grounds of New York’s iconic Central Park and the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. There are numerous specimen trees, manicured hedges, and unique plants throughout the grounds.
Inside, it’s apparent that the sensitive restoration kept a sense of elegance from a bygone era. There are 12-foot-high Venetian plaster walls, custom crown molding, walnut floors, mahogany-ribboned trim, and other classic details. Once you pass the grand formal entry, you’re met with a sunlit living room, dining room, and study with limestone and marble fireplaces. No matter where you are in the house, you encounter natural light thanks to the voluminous spaces and oversized windows.
As part of the renovation, there’s a lovely eat-in kitchen with a butler’s pantry and a family room that connect seamlessly to the outdoors. The primary suite is situated on the second level, with a fireplace and spa-like bathroom featuring an onyx spa bath and Lefroy Brooks fixtures. The additional guest bedrooms are situated in a separate guest wing to give the owners absolute privacy, and there’s even an elevator that leads to a private terrace overlooking the ocean. The main residence also has a 10-seat movie theater with fiber optic ceiling lights. The detached guest house contains a total of five bathrooms and a kitchen; the grounds also include a tennis court, swimming pool, and greenhouse amid acres of rolling lawns.
There are many opportunities for future development, from developing a new subdivision to creating a generational estate with multiple homes among the woodlands. Golf lovers especially will appreciate its location near Shinnecock Hills, a premier golf destination that regularly hosts the U.S. Open and the world’s top golfers.
