I enjoy planning and cooking my own meals, but the convenience of meal kit delivery services can’t be overlooked. I learned this the hard (or, rather, easy) way earlier this year when I needed to clear my plate a bit (literally and figuratively) in the middle of moving. After a few nights of takeout, eaten while sitting on moving boxes, my partner and I agreed we couldn’t keep running up our dinner bill. But we didn’t have time to go to the grocery store, either — especially with most of our kitchen cookware and tools still in boxes.

That’s where EveryPlate came into the picture. With a box of ingredients dropped off on my doorstep and the recipes already planned out, I was easily able to squeeze some home-cooked meals in between unpacking boxes.

What Is EveryPlate?

EveryPlate is a meal subscription from the people behind one of the OG meal delivery kit services, HelloFresh, so they really know what they are doing. What makes EveryPlate different from other meal kits is that affordability is the brand’s top priority, with meals starting at $5.99 per serving — that’s more than half the price of other services I’ve tested!

Rest assured, this too-good-to-be-true discount doesn’t show in the dishes. There are dozens of delicious and ever-changing meals to choose from, so you never have to repeat dishes — unless you want to. Compared to other meal kits I’ve tried in the past, the EveryPlate recipes were also easier to prepare with minimal work.

However, at these prices, it does mean that EveryPlate can’t cater to different dietary preferences so you wouldn’t be able to choose between vegan, gluten-free, Paleo, or low-carb options. Nutrition information is provided for each recipe so you’d be able to see if certain meals can still fit your lifestyle.

How Much Does EveryPlate Cost?

The cost of EveryPlate varies based on the number of servings and number of people you’re feeding. Currently, the smallest plan for new members is three meals for two people per week, and comes out to $35.94 for your first box. For five meals for six people per week, the price jumps to $179.70.

However, there are often discounts and special promotions for new members, so the prices might fluctuate depending on the deal you snag. Students can also score a significant discount on subscriptions.

My Honest Review of EveryPlate

All the ingredients in my EveryPlate box were individually sealed in plastic bags and everything was packed neatly inside with ice packs. The ingredients weren’t organized by meal so it took a little time to sort through what I needed for each meal I was testing, but it’s a small chore compared to planning an entire trip to the grocery store.

The first meal my partner and I made was cumin-spiced pork rice bowls with cucumber salad, which just involved cooking rice on the stovetop, stir-frying thinly-sliced pork with the seasoning packet, chopping some cucumber, and mixing the garlic sauce packet with some mayo from my fridge. (Keep in mind that these meals were prepared with my counters cluttered with glasses, plates, and bowls that hadn’t found a home in my kitchen yet.)

This was a pretty low-stakes meal, all things considered, but the smoky pork, crisp cucumber, and creamy garlic sauce over steamy rice was perfectly balanced and satisfying. It was a glorious bite after an exhausting day of moving — our first home-cooked meal in our new kitchen was a total success!

In fact, the recipes were so easy that I was able to make two meals at once. I had a busy week ahead of me, so I decided to make creamy Dijon chicken and smash burgers with potato wedges at the same time for dinner and an easy next-day lunch.

For dinner we had the creamy Dijon chicken, which was a magical one-pan wonder meal and super convenient during our move. I seared the chicken fillets first and then built a pan sauce with the broth and Dijon mustard, both ingredients supplied by EveryPlate. All the while, broccoli and potato wedges roasted in the oven (on parchment paper so that doesn’t count as a dirty dish!). It was so effortless, I was able to meal prep the Super Smash burgers at the same time to have for lunch the next day.

Who Is EveryPlate Good For?

EveryPlate is perfect for anyone looking to save time and money — so I guess that means it’s perfect for everyone.

But seriously, this meal kit service is ideal for anyone who’s busy with work, family, or just life. Sometimes grocery shopping and cooking just feels too arduous and time-consuming to tackle. I think families especially can rely on EveryPlate because plans can feed up to six people pretty reasonably without compromising flavor and nourishment, and most dishes are ready in about 30 minutes. It’s also a great service to try during the holidays and through the new year when you’re focused on shopping for gifts and visiting loved oned.

If I could make time to cook while moving during the holidays, I’ll bet almost anyone can fit EveryPlate into their budget and schedule.
