House of the Dragon season 4 confirmed as final series
Get ready to say goodbye to Westeros all over again, as it's just been confirmed House of the Dragon season four will be the series last. Ok, so we've only just finished season two of the Game of Thrones spin-off, but now that we have an end game in sight, we're suddenly very distraught at the thought of one of our favourite shows ending.
So when can we expect the fourth season to appear on our screens? And crucially what will happen in the dramatic conclusion? Here's what you need to know about House of the Dragon season four.
When was House of the Dragon season 4 confirmed?
On 5th August 2024, following the series finale of House of the Dragon season two, series showrunner and co-creator Ryan Condal confirmed season four will be the final season of the show.
During a press conference, Condal also revealed the third season will begin filming in early 2025 and he expects the following season to follow a similar pattern to season two in terms of episode length.
"I haven’t had discussions with HBO about it. I would just anticipate the cadence of the show, from a dramatic storytelling perspective, will continue to be the same from season two on," he told the crowd, as per Variety.
What will happen in House of the Dragon season 4?
Well this all depends on what happens in the third season of House of the Dragon. The first two seasons have seen a build up to the war between Team Green and Team Black, but we expect the third season to (hopefully) include more dramatic battles.
During the 5th August press conference Condal addressed the lack of big battle scenes in the second season, in particular the Battle of the Gullet, which many fans were hoping would be shown this season.
"We we were trying to give the Gullet, which is arguably the most anticipated — well, I would say maybe the second-most-anticipated — action event of Fire & Blood trying to give it the time and the space that it deserves,” Condal explained. “Obviously, as anybody that’s seen the finale, we’re building to that event. That event will happen very shortly in terms of the storytelling of House of the Dragon."
The HBO series is based on George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood novel, one part of the wider Game of Thrones novel series.
If the series is to follow the plot of Fire & Blood then the series could end with seeing the future reign of the successor of the Dance of the Dragons, however, given how Game of Thrones ended we imagine the series will end with seeing the successor of the Dance of the Dragons ascend the Iron Throne.
Who will be in the cast of House of The Dragon season 4?
Again this is all dependent on what plot lines of Fire & Blood make it into season three of the show. As with all of Martin's novels, characters aren't spared from death and so we can definitely expect to sadly not see all our favourite characters make it to the final season.
However, two people we would expect to make it to the final season are Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen and Tom Glynn-Carney as Aegon Targaryen.
Without giving too much away in terms of spoilers, the final showdown in the Dance of the Dragons does come down between these two in the battle for the Iron Throne and so we would expect both actors to appear in season four.
What is the expected release date of House of the Dragon season 4?
While nothing has been confirmed in terms of release date, if we are to look at the previous two seasons' release dates, we could expect to see the season finale of House of the Dragon sometime in 2028.
The first season of the show was released in August 2022, and the second in July 2024. The third season is expected to begin filming in early 2025 and will likely then air in 2026.
We would then expect filming of the final season to take place in 2026/2027 before it finally airs in 2028.
At least we'll have plenty of time to read Fire & Blood before then.
