Ikea has given its bestselling Pax wardrobe a makeover, with a new innovative frame that folds like a book.

While Pax is Ikea’s flagship storage solution, loved for its modular system and versatile interior organisers, the assembly has been challenging for those with limited space. The new foldable frame aims to change all that, allowing for vertical assembly in half the time.

'At Ikea, we always strive to do better, and one of our biggest motivators is our customers’ feedback. We knew customers loved Pax as an affordable and versatile wardrobe solution. We also understood that product assembly could be challenging, so we wanted to bring our customers an innovative solution while maintaining the quality that Pax has been known and loved for,' says Mathias Persson, engineering manager at Ikea of Sweden AB. 'We are very happy with the result and hope our customers will be as well.'

So how does it work? Several years in the making, the innovative frame includes a pre-glued, one-piece back and side panel that folds like a book, allowing Pax to be assembled vertically, directly against the wall.

Based on Ikea's in-house testing, the new foldable frame also reduces assembly time in half. Thanks to a wedge dowel, a type of joint invented by Ikea engineers that snaps pieces together, assembly now requires fewer steps due to fewer fittings.

The new Pax can be disassembled and reassembled so that you can take it with you when you move, or pass it on when you no longer need it. It also allows for easier transportation in pieces, reducing the risk of damage or breakage.

‘Easy assembly is a part of Ikea’s ongoing innovation work for our storage systems. Our ambition is to make all our storage systems easy to assemble. The new Pax frame is just the beginning,’ adds Mathias.

With research showing that clutter can impact sleep quality, Pax is just one of the many storage solutions Ikea has developed to help customers keep their sleeping spaces tidy.

The topic of sleep is a focus for Ikea following its Life at Home report, which reveals that 55 per cent of people rate sleep as their most important wellbeing activity at home. Yet, numerous studies show that as many as one out of two adults report dissatisfaction with their sleep.

Ikea’s year-long initiative of new research and affordable products will cover six areas proven to be essential for quality sleep: comfort, sound, light, air, temperature, and decluttering.

We have listened to our customers to develop our range of complete sleep solutions to better meet their diverse needs, enabling everyone to create their own comfortable and restful sleep environment,' says Fredrika Inger, managing director of Ikea of Sweden.
