M&S has joined forces with The National Gallery to curate a homeware collection inspired by the gallery's 17th century Dutch flower paintings. The original artworks, along with their rich and luminous colour palettes, have been reimagined in the form of tableware, lighting and accessories, and the result is the epitome of decadence.

Just in time for autumn, as we're all looking to curate cosy and cocooning spaces, M&S and The National Gallery's collaboration brings all the dark and sultry tones reminiscent of the season. Complete with rich velvets, brushed gold metallics and traditional statement trimmings, the collection is sumptuous and elegant.

In the 17th century, Dutch artists such as Jan van Huysum and Rachel Ruysch were among the first to produce paintings that exclusively depicted flowers. The sudden emergence of these flower paintings, often set against a dark backdrop, was linked to increased scientific interest in botany and horticulture.

Now, The National Gallery is home to some of the greatest examples of Dutch flower painting of this era in the world. And with this new collaboration, this instantly recognisable style of painting is given a whole new platform – no longer the reserve of art enthusiasts, everyone can have access to this luminous and blousy style and display a symbol of its history in their homes.

This collection incorporates traditional painterly prints with on-trend designs that will suit modern homes. Tapping into trends such as large frills and tactile statement fringing, the shapes and styles of the larger pieces bring these vintage prints bang up to date. So, art lover or not, these pieces will work for everyone.

'For the M&S design team, having access to such a rich library of paintings – from iconic masterpieces to renaissance and impressionist styles – was a world of discovery,' says Karen Thomas, head of home design at M&S. 'It has been a joy to delve in to some of the greatest paintings in the world.

'We’ve been able to explore the rich floral artwork and take inspiration from their depth and vibrancy of colour to create bold new combinations and striking new pattern placements, reimagining iconic paintings into products for our M&S customers to enjoy in their home.'
