Inside a New $13.6 Million Arts and Crafts Estate in the English Countryside
This U.K. home looks like it was designed during the late 19th century, but it wasn’t.
In the English county of Surrey, a newly built country estate that combines the British Arts and Crafts style with modern comforts has come to market with Savills and Knight Frank for £10.5 million (or about $13.6 million). Known as Millhanger Farmhouse, the acclaimed Yiangou Architects and super-prime real estate developer Finchatton built the nearly 11,400-square-foot property this year. Most notably, Finchatton is behind some of the most high-end residential projects in London including The Whiteley and Twenty Grosvenor Square.

“I believe Millhanger was one of the first of what we now call para 84e houses to be designed in the spirit of Edwardian Arts and Crafts,” architect Ross Sharpe, director of Yiangou Architects, said in a statement. “High-quality, natural materials, completely appropriate for the setting and context of the house are used throughout and the house has been designed to be as energy efficient and environmentally friendly as possible.”
Paragraph 84e is a planning policy that allows for the construction of isolated homes in the countryside. In order to qualify, the dwelling must be “truly outstanding” and “significantly enhance its setting.” The six-bed, six-bath property sits on a whopping 35 acres roughly 45 miles outside of central London in an area known as The Weald. The abode itself is surrounded by formal gardens, rolling pastures, and lush woodlands with 360-degree rural views. It’s also equipped with a ground source heat pump and solar panels on the roof.
From the outside, the contractors used a mix of brickwork and different colored stones to honor the original design trend. Internally, U.K.-based studio Sims Hilditch paid homage to the shingle-style houses of the American Arts and Crafts movement with lots of cornice detailing, grand staircases, marbles in the bathrooms, and wood paneling. The spread includes a drawing room, morning room, formal dining room, a kitchen, and staff apartment. There’s also space to add a tennis court and a swimming pool if you choose.
“Millhanger Farmhouse is the epitome of Arts and Crafts style reimagined and intelligently designed for modern life,” adds Crispin Holborow, joint head of the private office at Savills. “Though set in the beautiful Surrey countryside in an elevated position with outstanding views, Millhanger is within easy reach of central London, making it an ideal family base.”
