Inside the Guinness x JW Anderson Collection
My future father-in-law, Tom, insists some Guinness will always do you some good.
It's advice he drafted from his late mother (Scouse-Irish, strong, iconic), popularised in the Dublin-born brewery's early century advertising campaigns. Now, this week, the motto has made its way onto JW Anderson's collaboration with the 265-year-old stout brand.
The collection consists of ready-to-wear garments as timeless and reliable as a Temple Bar pint. All four pieces in the impending pre-SS25 drop – two limited-edition T-shirts, a sweatshirt and a jumper – have been designed by Jonathan Anderson and co. to be thrown on with absolutely anything else in your wardrobe.
In case you spend more time down the pub than reading about menswear (in which case, I'm honoured to find you here), it might help to know that Jonathan Anderson is an Irish designer.
“I’ve always been obsessed with Guinness,” says the designer. “In fashion we think we are so radical but, actually, they were way before all of that.”
He's specifically referring to the brand's quirky marketing, such as the grinning pint graphic which he has placed on a sweatshirt, and one of the baseball-inspired tees along with the question mark-less slogan “Aren't you're glad you've had a Guinness”.
Funnily enough, the limited line (which has probably been in the making for some years) arrives at a time when, yes, Britain is glad it's had a Guinness.
Simon Dodd of Young & Co Brewery recently told the FT that Guinness sales were up by 29%.
In our editor-in-chief Alex Bilmes' stein-sized write-up on The Devonshire, the trendiest pub in London, he reported that “one in nine pints pulled in Britain today is a Guinness”.
(It's a piece you can rely on as, believe you me, he did a great deal of research.)
With all that in mind, we suggest you get a round of this collection in quick as, unlike the “beneficial” Irish stout, it won't stick around forever.
The Guinness x JW Anderson collaboration is available from Friday in JW Anderson's Soho, London store and on jwanderson.com. Prices start at £155.
