Lip Stains Are Beauty's Biggest Breakout Trend JC Olivera

Take it from TikTok – lip stains are having a major resurgence right now. From the Couture Fashion Week runways to the virtual beauty shelves, lip stains are back and better than ever. As to how they've been upgraded for 2025, it's all about modern, innovative formulas that are smudge-proof; some peel off and tap into 'no make-up make-up', while others offer unparalleled staying power and a pop of colour.

Lip stains have been gaining traction online, and if you've spotted one of the myriad videos showing the semi-permanent liners - and their longevity throughout the day - you'll know why. Billie Eilish is among a growing legion of fans. Fresh off the North American leg of her Hit Me Hard and Soft tour, Eilish posted a TikTok video of her make-up routine, professing her love for a now viral lip stain.

Using a mixture of high-end and pharmacy beauty products, Billie confirmed that the viral Sacheu Stay-N lip liner is her favourite. The A-list-approved, smudge-proof lip stain stays in place for up to 12 hours and is already a hit online, with over 2.5 billion views on TikTok.

In the video, Billie cleans her lips with an earbud first, applies the shade 'Noohd' to her lip line, lets it set for 10 minutes and then peels it off, leaving her with a deep pink nude stain. If you’re curious how Billie’s make-up held up, after '95 minutes of running around and sweating' her lip liner was perfectly intact post-performance.

From 'Cherry Coca-Cola' lips to the 'blurry' lip look, we’ve seen glimpses of the trend emerge in the last year, with celebrities such as Lily-Rose Depp and Hailey Bieber fuelling renewed intrigue in lip stains and liner.

Offering a similar aesthetic to a lip stain, you can also use bold, contrasting lip liners to create a contoured shape and enhance your natural lip to give a fuller, more defined finish. Lily-Rose Depp is a prime example, who opted for Chanel’s 'Le Crayon Lévres Longwear Lip Pencil' in the shade '162 Nude Brun' for Nosferatu’s press tour and the recent Chanel show. The subtle yet sophisticated nude brown shade adds the perfect lip contour to her polished look.

Beauty brands are taking note and there have been more lip stain and liner launches in the last year than ever before. REFY, Vieve, and Victoria Beckham Beauty have all expanded on their liner offering, while Rhode launched its Peptide Lip Shape, earlier this year. Unlike traditional lip liners, the lip shape is designed to contour and sculpt the lip to create a fuller-looking pout.

As we move into 2025, it’s clear that lip stains—whether it’s sharp and defined or softly diffused—are here to stay.
