Inuk influencer opens up about 'tough' mental health journey in powerful video

The throat singer and advocate for Indigenous rights shared that she spent a week in the hospital last year.

Shina Nova is opening up about self-healing.

On Monday, the Inuk influencer, renowned for her throat singing talents and advocacy for Indigenous rights, candidly opened up in a poignant Instagram Reel about her mental health journey.

Hailing from the Nunavik village of Puvirnituq in Quebec, Nova began by saying a few months ago she revealed on social media that she attempted to "unalive" herself.

"It was a tough year," the 24-year-old said before sharing that in November 2022, she had to be admitted to the hospital where she remained for nearly a week due to the damage inflicted on her liver.

"It wasn't the first or last time I've tried this," Nova continued. "I was in serious need of help.

"Luckily, I had my friends and my family by my side. I received so much love."

Nova felt comforted after learning she wasn't "alone" and there are many others who share similar experiences and struggles.

"I've been focusing on my mental health and knowing how to balance my life," she went on. "And how to love myself again.

"Never would have thought to be here today. Mental illness is real, and you are not fighting this alone."

By visualizing her younger self, Nova was able to gain a deeper understanding, reminding her of her own strength.

"What helped me a lot was to picture my younger self in front of me and have a conversation with her," Nova assured her fans. "It allowed me to understand her hopes and dreams as a reminder to why I am here today.

"This is an ongoing journey of self-healing, but I promise as corny as it sounds, with time, it does get better. ... Here's to entering a new chapter."

In the comments, fans applauded Nova's vulnerability and praised her commitment to improving her mental health.

"I'm proud of your progress," one person shared. "I love that you're so transparent with your mental health."

"Your strength and bravery are inspirational. Sending you love and positivity," another wrote.

"Thank you for sharing that with us, you are not alone," someone chimed in.

One person penned, "Please continue to stay here with us. Thank you for sharing your vulnerability and making countless people's lives better."

In December, Nova shared a photo of herself at the hospital amid her recovery paired with another message about mental health awareness.

"I am battling with depression. Mental illness is real," she wrote. "I am grateful to be given another chance. I am grateful for my family and my friends. I know I can get better, I know we can get out of this."
