Here's Your First Look at Inventing Anna, Netflix's Anna Delvey Show Starring Julia Garner
In 2018, New York magazine's Jessica Pressler published an article that quickly became the talk of the town. "How Anna Delvey Tricked New York’s Party People" dove into the delicious story of a Russian-born twenty-something named Anna Sorokin, who, through rebranding herself as Anna Delvey, a wealthy heiress, had conned her way into an extravagant lifestyle, rubbing shoulders with the city's elite. Almost overnight, Delvey had captured the internet's imagination—and, even after her subsequent prison sentence, maintains some of it to this day.
The stranger-than-fiction story is now being adapted into a highly-anticipated limited series for Netflix. Here's what we know so far about Inventing Anna.
The series will launch in 2022.
Filming hadn't quite finished when the COVID-19 pandemic forced an industry-wide shutdown, so the series was delayed from its originally planned 2021 launch date. It'll now premiere on Netflix early in 2022.
Per the official synopsis, the show's protagonist won't necessarily be Delvey, but Vivian, the journalist investigating her con (played by Veep's Anna Chlumsky). Vivian is tasked with digging into "the case of Anna Delvey, the Instagram-legendary German heiress who stole the hearts of New York’s social scene – and stole their money as well. But is Anna New York’s biggest con woman, or is she simply the new portrait of the American dream?"
The synopsis goes on to detail the "dark, funny, love-hate bond" that forms between Vivian and Anna in the run-up to the trial, as "our reporter fights the clock to answer the biggest question in NYC: who is Anna Delvey?" Pressler, who of course serves as the inspiration for Vivian, is also a producer on the series.
Netflix just shared a handful of first-look images of Garner and Chlumsky in the show, which are embedded throughout this article.
Shonda Rhimes is executive producing.
Inventing Anna is among the many shows Rhimes is developing for Netflix. She's executive producing alongside Shondaland’s Betsy Beers and Pressler, the author of the source material. David Frankel, the director behind The Devil Wears Prada, is also executive producing, and will direct two of the show's 10 episodes.
The cast is stacked.
Julia Garner, fresh off her second Emmy win for Ozark, stars as the infamous Anna Delvey (real name: Anna Sorokin), leading an impressive group of co-stars: Chlumsky as Vivian; Laverne Cox as Kacy Duke, a celebrity trainer and life coach; Katie Lowes as Vanity Fair employee Rachel Williams, who befriends Anna and pays the price; Succession's Arian Moayed as Delvey's lawyer; and Jennifer Esposito as Talia Mallay, the famous owner of a lifestyle brand. Alexis Floyd, Anders Holm, Anna Deavere Smith, Jeff Perry, and Terry Kinney round out the cast.
