Having my own KitchenAid stand mixer for the first time really made me feel like an adult. My husband and I received one as a generous gift from our wedding registry, and setting it up in my first apartment as a married woman became a milestone I never thought to look forward to, but that I definitely look back on. Through the years, my mixer moved with me through several homes and states. Even as our location and kitchen decor evolved, our KitchenAid was a steady presence — always ready and waiting on the countertop.

Whether it’s to whip up a batch of cinnamon rolls or to quickly shred some cooked chicken breast, my stand mixer is one of my most essential kitchen appliances. In fact, I’ve upgraded to an even bigger size to accommodate my large family. And because it’s used so often, my mixer needs to be accessible. In our new home, however, the kitchen setup dictates that the mixer’s spot on the counter isn’t totally within reach; I need to move it closer to me on the counter to use it. In past kitchens, I only needed to move the mixer a couple of inches closer to me, but in the current one, I need to move it at least a foot, if not more.

This is harder than it seems. If you’ve ever tried “sliding” a stand mixer more than a couple of inches, you know that this is not a smooth endeavor. The rubber feet, made to keep the mixer steady during use, judder across the counter in a noisy, glitchy journey that rattles me. Plus, it’s heavy. It’s not the greatest beginning to a baking session! And moving it back isn’t fun, either.

Luckily, I was able to solve this problem with a $10 Mover Slider Mat Pad from Amazon. The mat is soft and slightly padded, with non-slip rubber for the mixer to rest on. The underside is made of a smooth material that glides smoothly over any hard surface. The mat even has an unobtrusive handle that you can grab to pull the mat with the KitchenAid on top of it toward you easily. Plus, it’s odorless and super easy to clean.

I love this mat and I’m grateful to have it every single time I reach for my stand mixer. Rather than recovering from a rattling bumpy and awkward retrieval of the mixer, I pull it gently right to where I need it and push it back easily when I’m done. The slider mat pad is one of my favorite kitchen problem-solvers — it’s basically invisible and makes moving my mixer seamless and easy, resolving my biggest pain point.
