Italian village offers 1-euro homes to Americans wanting to relocate after election

A small rural village in Italy is offering homes for as little as $1.06 after the 2024 presidential election.

“Are you worned out by global politics? Looking to embrace a more balanced lifestyle while securing new opportunities? It’s time to start building your European escape in the stunning paradise of Sardinia,” the promotional website says.

The village of Ollolai on the island of Sardinia is working to increase their population size after decades of decline by attracting Americans seeking a new home.

“Of course, we can’t specifically mention the name of one U.S. president who just got elected, but we all know that he’s the one from whom many Americans want to get away from now and leave the country,” Mayor Francesco Columbo told CNN.

“We have specifically created this website now to meet U.S. postelections relocation needs.”

He went on to outline the different homes available to interested individuals.

Move-in ready homes are priced at up to 100,000 euros while some homes in need of updates are being sold for a single euro.

Some digital nomads will be offered free housing.

“Americans will have a fast-track procedure,” Columbo told CNN. “We are betting on them to help us revive the village, they are our winning card.”

The village of Ollolai first unveiled the project in August and has reported more than 18,000 people have already applied for entry.

“We certainly do not think of solving serious problems such as depopulation, but it is a way to break down barriers, bring different knowledge and experiences to the community and make the territory known,” the Mayor said when announcing the project.

Sardinia is known as the second-largest island in the Mediterranean Sea.

“Nestled in pristine nature, surrounded by incredible cuisine, and immersed in a community with ancient traditions, in the rare Earth’s Blue Zone, Ollolai is the perfect destination to reconnect, recharge, and embrace a new way of life,” read the posting.
