It's September: These are the best and the worst things to buy this month
Whether you’ve realized it or not, throughout the year there’s a sale cycle that creates good and bad times to make certain purchases. Usually based around holidays or major shopping events, every month has different items that you should add to your shopping lists if you’re looking to save big.
Now that we’ve entered September, there’s a whole bunch of items that you’ll want to take note of if you’re looking to score the best deals, as well as a few items to avoid this month.

Mattresses and Linens
Around Labour Day and throughout the month of September is one of the few times throughout the year when mattresses go on sale. Whether it’s to outfit a new dorm room or just a refresh on your bedroom, now’s the best time to make your purchase.
SHOP IT: Save up to 70% on mattresses at Wayfair.
Flights
If you’re planning a trip over the holidays, September is the time to start looking for cheap flights. The best deals are usually found about eight weeks before your departure, so start planning now to take advantage of the best prices.
SHOP IT: Start planning your holiday vacation with Air Canada’s Worldwide Sale.
iPhones
September is the month when Apple unveils their newest iPhones (rumours have it they’ll be announced next week), so if you don’t mind picking up last year’s phone, prices are much more affordable than any brand-new models.
SHOP IT: Get a head start on comparing iPhone models.
Summer Gear
Now that summer’s over, all the gear that you’ll soon be packing away for the season will be going on sale. Whether it’s a new bike, a lawnmower, or a new patio furniture set, start shopping around now to find the best deals.
SHOP IT: Save big on outdoor equipment and sports gear at Canadian Tire.
Cars
With next year’s new models hitting car dealerships, now’s the best time to start shopping if you’re in the market for a new car. Dealers are looking to sell fast, so expect to find plenty of great deals on last year’s models.

Electronics
Some retailers will be offering markdowns as part of their Labour Day sales, but with Black Friday just around the corner, you’re better off saving your money for November’s major shopping event.
Halloween Costumes
As tempting as it can be to start shopping early, the seasonal nature of Halloween costumes and decor means that the longer it sticks around in stores, the cheaper it will be. We suggest waiting until at least October to pick up the perfect 2019 costume.
Appliances
On top of the latest electronics, Black Friday is a great time to take advantage of discounts on big-ticket items like washers, dryers, and dishwashers. New models of large appliances like washers, dryers, and dishwashers will be hitting stores soon, meaning discounts are sure to follow.
