Janelle Monáe embodied the Met Gala 2019 theme while still looking chic — complete with blinking eye body covering

While celebrities quietly fretted over this year's Met Gala theme, Janelle Monáe seemed to claim the crown as the "Camp" queen effortlessly in her Picasso and Dali-inspired look created by Christian Siriano.

The singer, well known for her bold fashion choices, including the iconic black and white Marc Jacobs gown she wore last year to the event, successfully embodied “Camp: Notes on Fashion" with a fusion of asymmetrical sleeves, a haphazardly stacked tower of top hats on her head, and an iconic eye, with an actual blinking feature, on her left breast.

Alexandra Mandelkorn, Monáe's stylist who has been working with the artist for over two years, told Variety that they went through 15 sketches by Siriano before finally deciding on Monáe's final Met Gala look.

"This was a true collaborative process," Mandelkorn said. "We went back and forth on hundreds of texts, emails and phone calls, relaying Janelle’s desires and ideas to Christian Siriano, who would then in turn come back with his interpretation of her thoughts."

Even the blinking eye had "a mind of her own." Mandelkorn told The Hollywood Reporter that her team worked with Smooth Technology in order to program the eye with a random blinking sequence.

The dedication to the final product, which aimed to be highly theatrical and playful, paid off, according to many users on Twitter.

"Honestly, every single part is important in making the look as strong as it is," Mandelkorn said. "From the crystal detailing, the black trimming, to the silhouette and the incredible hat sculpture – every bit matters! But I do have to say the blinking eye really makes me smile!"
