Jennifer Lopez just cemented XXL mermaid waves as the big hair trend of 2022
With the arrival of the New Year comes a bunch of trends we’re bound to see all over social media. Last year, it was all about 90s-style hairstyles, covering everything from baby braids and space buns to blocky side fringes and butterfly clips.
Now, Jennifer Lopez has kicked off the arrival of hairstyles we’re going to see throughout 2022 and she’s giving us another hit of nostalgia.
J-Lo’s go-to hairstylist Chris Appleton posted a picture of the most recent look he created for the singer: pretty mermaid waves created with some extra-long hair extensions. In the caption, he wrote: “Kicking of 2022 with jlos Waves 🌊”
Of course, we saw mermaid waves crop up from time to time during 2021. The old-school hairstyle was spotted on celebs including Cardi B, Normani, Kylie Jenner and Zendaya.
While we don’t know what this fire look was for, we do know how you can achieve a similar finish. When your hair is dry, style it into one large plait or a few smaller ones. Then, gently run a heated straightener over your plaits a few times.
Once it’s done, undo the plait(s) and you’ll have gorgeous tumbling waves. Ruffle up your hair a bit and finish with a finishing crème or a lightweight oil.
We’re sure J-Lo’s mermaid waves won’t be the last time we see this hairstyle over 2022. In fact, I might just go and plait my hair right now…
