Money pieces—contrasting, face-framing highlights that are at least three shades brighter than the rest of your hair color—hit peak trendiness in 2022 and 2023. And while they never went away, they've certainly been a little less visible despite being such a cute and lower-commitment way to update your look. So when we saw Jennifer Lopez wearing a new take on money pieces, we immediately braced for the delightful impact of a triumphant new surge in the trend.
Lopez is currently promoting her new film, a reimagining of Kiss Of The Spider Woman, in Utah at the Sundance Film Festival, serving up seriously stunning looks at all of her official appearances, from the premiere to interviews in Park City. At one of those interviews, Lopez wore a snow-bunny-inspired outfit—all white except for a camel-colored Hermes pocket belt—that complemented the similarly caramel tones of her hair.
And while J. Lo is arguably the queen of caramel highlights, something feels different about her current hair look. Aside from being a long but not capital-L Long length like she so often enjoys wearing, the color recalls the chunky highlights of the Y2K era—and yet, there's nothing intentionally jarring about the contrasting colors. The two tones are closely related, and while there are the sections of lighter hair clearly pop, the variation is unbelievably smooth (much like the blowout itself).
Nothing makes this expertly colored creation more apparent than her money pieces. Lopez's hair is darkest near the roots and lighter toward the ends (ombré lives on!) but the highlights remain the same toasty golden shade, creating the greatest contrast on her curtain bangs.
It may not hit like the boldest takes on money pieces and chunky highlights, but that's exactly why we love it—it's proof that you can make a hyper-trendy look seem like quiet luxury when your colorist has a vision and impeccable technique. (Just call Chris Appleton—no big deal.)
