Jessica Mulroney is speaking out against critics of her best friend, the Duchess of Sussex.

On Tuesday, the Toronto-based brand strategist and Good Morning America correspondent took to social media to defend Meghan Markle against “racist bullies.”

“When someone faces unfair criticism, you call it out,” Mulroney wrote. “When that person is your friend and your family, you call those critics what they truly are. Shame on you, you racist bullies.”

The statement comes in the midst of public backlash towards the Duke and Duchess of Sussex after it was reported the royals took four private jet flights in 11 days. The couple have been called “hypocrites” by several media outlets for contradicting their public stance on climate change.

The mother-of-three, who sat front row at Markle’s wedding to Prince Harry in May 2018, said her friend has experienced “three years of undeserved hate and abuse. It’s enough.”

Mulroney isn’t the only one to defend the Duke and Duchess.

In a statement to Instagram, singer Elton John publicly defended the couple after they travelled to his home in Nice for a private vacation with their son, Archie Harrison Mountbatten Windsor.

“I am deeply distressed by today’s distorted and malicious account in the press surrounding the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s private stay at my home in Nice last week,” he said.

“Prince Harry’s Mother, Diana Princess Of Wales, was one of my dearest friends. I feel a profound sense of obligation to protect Harry and his family from the unnecessary press intrusion that contributed to Diana’s untimely death.”

“After a hectic year continuing their hard work and dedication to charity, David and I wanted the young family to have a private holiday inside the safety and tranquility of our home. To maintain a high level of much-needed protection, we provided them with a private jet flight. To support Prince Harry’s commitment to the environment, we ensured their flight was carbon neutral, by making the appropriate contribution to Carbon Footprint.”

“I highly respect and applaud both Harry and Meghan’s commitment to charity and I’m calling on the press to cease these relentless and untrue assassinations on their character that are spuriously crafted on an almost daily basis.”

The media attention surrounding the couple regarding their carbon footprint is the breaking point for Sussex friends such as Mulroney, who have witnessed racially-driven attacks on Markle since she was first linked to Prince Harry in 2016.

Mulroney shared a tweet by actress and activist Jameela Jamil summarizing the veiled criticism towards the Duchess.

“Ugh. Dear England and English press, just say you hate her because she’s black, and him for marrying a black woman and be done with it God dammit,” Jamil wrote. “Your bullying is so embarrassing and obvious. You’ve all lost your marbles. It’s 2019. Grow up.”

Mulroney’s public post protecting her friend has been met with mixed reviews. While some have refused to acknowledge Markle’s history with the press and comments regarding her race, others are rallying around the royal pair, requesting the brand expert pass along messages of support to Markle.

“I hope they know they are supported and loved,” one Mulroney follower wrote, while others added, “Tell her we love her, please.”
