John Lewis reveals what we were buying in 2024
Sales of scalloped trays, green sofas and joyful stripes have soared this year, according to John Lewis & Partners.
In John Lewis' new 'How We Shop, Live and Look' trend report, the British retailer analysed shopping habits using sales data from the last 12 months. From vintage furniture to pink homeware, they looked at what has risen in popularity—and what's fallen out of favour.
Take a look at the best-selling items below:
1. Stripes for joy
This year saw the comeback of the classic stripe. According to John Lewis, sales of stripes were up 37 per cent across various home products, from curtains and cushions to vases and lampshades.
The British retailer credits Sophie Conran for boosting the stripe revival, particularly her range of sofas, armchairs, and footstools in bold circus-tent stripes. Sophie has collaborated with John Lewis for almost two decades and says 'pattern can bring so much joy to the home'.

2. Glorious green
Green home decor is having a major moment, with John Lewis reporting green homeware rising by 16 per cent in 2024.
'After the Barbie-inspired bubblegum pink boom last year, people have sought the restorative effects of moss green, olive green, and fern green in their homes,' says the John Lewis report.
The retailer saw Bardello Pinheiro's hugely successful range of cabbage plates (below) and bowls lead the way in tableware. When it came to shopping, sales of green sofas shot up by 32 per cent, with green lamps, bedside tables, upholstery, and drawers also on the up. Meanwhile, pink was down seven per cent.

3. Funky salt and pepper shakers
Household staples like salt and pepper shakers were adding spice to shopping baskets around the country.
'This year, salt and pepper shakers have taken centre stage – everything from top-end designer pepper mills to classic wooden grinders,' says the British retailer. 'The real stars, however, are novelty cruet sets: pearls in a shell, mushrooms and little ceramic budgie shakers from Cath Kidston; sales of her range shot up eightfold, while the total collection of novelty salt and pepper shakers has rocketed 1,040 per cent. 4. Vintage furniture
Everything has a cycle in the decor world, but vintage furniture is one that rarely goes out of fashion.
John Lewis says there has been a resurgence in retro shopping this year, with customers choosing brands once loved by their grandparents, including Laura Ashley, G Plan, and Ercol.
'Ercol's simple, stripped-back mid-century modern look, which it helped popularise in the 1940s, has proved a real hit with shoppers, with sales of their chairs, tables, sideboards, stools and shelves up an impressive 52 per cent, and online searches for G Plan vintage sofas are up 600 per cent.'

5. Trayscaping is the new tablescaping
Move over tablescaping: trayscaping was the big table trend in 2024. Sales of trays were up by 106 per cent this year, with John Lewis seeing particular interest in hexagon trays and layered scalloped-edge designs.
'If you're looking for a quick and easy way to update your living room, give trayscaping a go,' says Felicity Burton, home design stylist at John Lewis. 'Grabbing a statement tray and gathering some of your most cherished possessions is a simple way to bring a fresh new look to your coffee table or footstool.'
