'John Wick: Chapter 4' Confirmed To Have More Obvious Final Scene, but "Audience Preferred the Ambiguous Ending"

This post may contain spoilers for John Wick: Chapter 4.

With how John Wick: Chapter 4 ended, it is uncertain how the next installment will begin. At the end of the film, John is presumed dead after a duel the freed himself from the High Table. In the third round of the duel, he is shot and appears to die on the steps of the Basilica of Sacré Coeur with a vision of his late wife, Helen. The ending cuts to the final scene between Ian McShane's Winston and Laurence Fishburne's Bowery King who are visiting John's grave.

In the latest interview with Empire director Chad Stahelski revealed for the first time ever that the original ending was actually more concrete about John's outcome. He says, "We had a different ending. [The theatrical ending] was the ending Keanu and I wanted, but we shot a different ending." He explains, "We shot an ending where you actually saw John Wick at the end of the movie. So it was very clear that he was still alive. The audiences we tested with absolutely preferred the ambiguous ending."

The original ending gives John the scope for a return. Stahelski admitted that the fourth film came with the desire to give it a better ending of that of Chapter 3 - Parabellum, "We didn't feel like we had done our best. We both felt like we could have ended the series better. We didn’t feel like we stuck the landing, and that's a shitty feeling. Because we love the character, we love working together, we love the world."

It is still unclear what the fifth film has in-store but it has been confirmed by Lionsgate.
