Markle and her husband Prince Harry’s recent declaration of independence from the royal family —dubbed “Mexit” by British tabloids — has garnered sympathy from many who saw a couple hounded by the press and criticized at every turn.
Behar disagreed and interrupted. “Oh, come on. She did it,” said Behar. “She said, ‘hey, I want to be a princess’ so now she’s a princess,” she added.
“I don’t think she said she wanted to be a princess, I think she just wanted to marry Harry, and he just happened to be a prince,” countered guest co-host, actress Yvette Nicole Brown.
“What a coincidence — he’s a prince!” joked Behar.
Viewers on took to Twitter with their opinions, and some said Behar should be a little more sympathetic to Markle’s plight:
Prince Harry is protecting his family. He wants out of the abusive relationship with the press and refuses to allow them to destroy Meghan like they did his mother.
Meanwhile, people are throwing fits as if they own them.
They royals are in golden handcuffs. #TheView

Joy, I disown you for bringing that question about Harry. You are a bully and you are the problem with why Meghan and Harry have to go hide.

But others agreed that Markle knew exactly what she was getting into:
@TheView only in America, will blame everyone else except the real reason, it’s Meghan. She knew what royalty meant. This was her plan right from the get go. I hope the queen and her son Charles disowns them. Madam Tussauds got it right, when she removed them from her gallery.

@TheView I have an unpopular view. Meghan married into the toughest family in the world. She knew it. I think Meghan has a responsibility to facilitate the family’s mission. I think this is a manipulative move on her part.
