Whether with auburn, buttery blonde or cool brunette hair, Julia Roberts has long been a colour chameleon. In fact, the actress is known for changing her palette in line with roles as much as the seasons.

Following a significant stint with a soft copper, for summer she's chosen to go back to blonde. And a luminous, bright blonde at that.

Joining George Clooney at a fundraiser hosted by President Joe Biden, Roberts revealed the look wearing a chic black Greta Constantine dress, which allowed the colour to pop adjacent to it.

"When making drastic colour changes, in this case from red to blonde, my approach is always the same," shared her hair colourist, Kadi, on Instagram. "Slow and methodical, while always keeping the health and integrity of the hair first and foremost".

The LA-based colour expert continued that she did a similar switch-up for the star some seven years ago, where she took the exact same approach.

"Drastic colour changes can be quite stressful for a colourist, but over the years I’ve developed a calm and methodical approach that (eventually) gives me the natural and realistic result I need, while keeping the hair strong and healthy (the most important part!)," she wrote. "Biggest tip – go gently, in multiple sessions. Do not be pressured by drastic and unrealistic before and after pictures on Instagram. Those photos don’t depict the dozens of hours of work, and they are often heavily edited. In real life, things take time. Really visualise your end result, and slowly and deliberately paint your way there."

London-based hair colourist Tom Smith agrees, noting that Roberts' new hue is the epitome of a SS24 colour trend he's coined 'sunflower blonde' (also seen on Rihanna, below, and Nicole Kidman this year).

"Warmer and golden blonde tones have been steadily growing traction as blondes want a bit of the ‘glow’ that copper and red hair offers without losing their ‘blonde identity’," he explains. "Sunflower blonde is the perfect summery blonde shade to bring a bit of ‘golden hour’ all day every day." Glowy and joyful, "this shade can be achieved with highlights on naturally lighter hair or with a full colour plus highlights on naturally deeper bases," he explains. "The tones are entirely golden with a real focus on shine and vibrancy."

As no doubt Roberts and her team know, health and shine is crucial for the success of this look, "so using regular conditioning treatments and bond builders will help to maintain the glow of the hair," says Smith.
