I Just Discovered the Most Brilliant Way to Seal a Bag of Potato Chips
TikTok will point you in the direction of so many ingenious ideas that you can use in the kitchen, from clever cooking techniques to highly sought-after celebrity-created recipes. Recently a creator shared a tutorial for sealing an open bag of potato chips (if you don’t have a clip on hand), and the video has since racked up 6.2 million views.
In the clip, @_finallyallison, a digital creator who shares recipes and cooking advice, dropped a step-by-step instructional video on sealing an open bag of chips sans any special equipment or clamps. It’s perfect for those moments when you’re snacking on some crisps, but know you won’t be able to finish the entire pouch.
Here’s how to do the famous chip bag folding technique: Start by straightening out the bag of chips, then fold each corner toward the back of the bag. After that, fold the top flap of the bag over itself. Next, roll the bag tightly from the top to the bottom right before you reach where you can feel the chips. Finally, tuck the open flaps in the front into the back of the bag to seal it. This method, which certainly feels a bit like origami, will keep your chips sealed so they don’t go stale.
People immediately raced to the comment section of this TikTok tutorial to share their thoughts. One person said, “Gonna try that next time — so neat!” while another user mentioned, “I learned this life hack years ago I still use it.”
Other people jokingly argued that this hack might take a bit too long, “Ain’t nobody got time for origami chip foldin’,” and another pointed out, “That’s cute that you think we don’t eat the whole bag in one sitting.”
If you find that this method of folding and sealing is a bit too complicated for your liking, you can try plenty of other chip-sealing hacks. Last year The Kitchn reported on another method that simply involves folding a triangle “ear” on each corner and then rolling the bag down.
Whichever route you decide to take, it’ll be worth it. While we can always hope we’ll have a chip clip on hand, that’s not always the case — especially if you find yourself at the beach or a BBQ. So, to prevent the fate of stale chips, use this brilliant technique and you’ll be on track to never waste your pouch of snacks again.
