I Just Tasted United Airline's New Magnolia Bakery Banana Pudding
The friendly skies are about to get a lot sweeter now that United has partnered with one of the country's most notable bakeries.
The airline has announced that it's now serving Magnolia Bakery's Banana Pudding Wafer Cookie Bits on flights. Described as a "wafer cookie wonderland," the pudding is a frozen-to-thaw offering that is banana flavored, and includes pieces of wafer cookies.
Delish's Editorial Director Joanna Saltz was one of the first to try out the new treat, so we're here to share the good, the bad, and the downright fluffy.
Magnolia Bakery's assortment of banana puddings are known for their effortlessly airy texture, and it's an element that translates well with its new onboard offering.
"The texture was incredibly light and fluffy—very true to the original, which was really nice and not something that’s expected. (When you think of these packaged puddings, they are all very dense)," Saltz revealed.
The package says "no artificial flavor" but somehow that fresh banana experience of the original pudding just doesn't translate in the sky-high version.
"But where the product goes wrong is in the flavor: Because they obviously can’t use fresh banana, they use banana flavoring, which tasted very artificial," Saltz explained. "It was more like a banana-flavored Laffy Taffy than the fresh banana taste Magnolia’s pudding is known for. I’m sure this is the challenge with mass-producing something that’s a homemade staple, but I hope they can figure out an alternative.
With Delta serving Shake Shack on flights and United offering banana pudding, we can only hope that McDonald's Snack Wraps on JetBlue flights are next.
In the meantime, all we have to say about this version of one of our fave in-store items at Magnolia Bakery is... it's giving Laffy Taffy.
