Kaia Gerber channels mother Cindy Crawford with this '90s make-up look
When you call the legendary supermodel Cindy Crawford 'mum', you don't have to look far for beauty inspiration.
In between strutting the catwalks of Paris Fashion Week for the likes of Valentino and Alexander McQueen, Kaia Gerber made an appearance sporting a beauty look reminiscent of Crawford's signature glam back in the '90s when her image became indelible in the public's minds.
Artfully created by A-list make-up artist Valeria Ferreira (her star-studded client roster includes Lily James, Rosamund Pike and Jerry Hall), Gerber went with smouldering, slate grey smoky eyes complete with Brooke Shields-esque arches and a neutral lip with soft brown undertones. The resemblance to her mother is uncanny.
Speaking to Bazaar last autumn, MAC Cosmetics ambassador and make-up artist Dominic Skinner says of this evergreen beauty look: “There’s a chicness to the simplicity of a dark eyelid and a transition shade through the socket – it's classic so will always work.”
To perfect Gerber's smoky eye at home, you'll need "something dark, something medium and something either lighter or the same colour as your skin tone," suggests Skinner. Apply the deepest shade along the lash lines and blend it upwards toward the crease before applying the medium tone "to the smudged-out part of the darker shade, taking it into crease and fading it out with a fluffy brush". Use the same hue along the lower lash lines using a finer brush to add definition. Finally, sweep the lightest tone along the socket towards your brow bones.
To give Gerber's look a 2023 spin, Ferreira sculpted the cheekbones using a light hand and a gentle peach blush which has a fresher effect than a bronzer or shadowy contour. The hair makes a world of difference, too. Hairstylist Hos Hounkpatin created laidback beachy waves complete with laissez-faire, French girl texture to keep things cool and current.
This isn't the first time Gerber's leaned into '90s-inspired aesthetics. In fact, the decade heavily informs the fashion star's hair and make-up choices as seen at the Vanity Fair party this year and the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures Annual Gala in 2022. The chic, fail-safe formula is here to stay.
