Kaia Gerber's resemblance to her mother Cindy Crawford is well versed, but there are times when the likeness is especially striking.

Her look for yesterday's Academy Museum Gala in Los Angeles was one of them. The 21-year-old's aesthetic referenced the Nineties supermodel (very 2022) in a sheer turtleneck top and draped skirt by Alaïa, a designer who helped define the fashion landscape of that decade – and for whom Crawford has been a longstanding muse. Gerber's beauty look spoke to the same story.

Given that Crawford was (and still is) the poster girl for the Nineties 'supermodel blowout' – which has been revived via TikTok, with countless tutorials on achieving bouncy volume by using rollers – Gerber's hair nodded to her mother's signature style but in a modern way. The side-parted down 'do had all the glamorous hallmarks of a traditional Crawford blowout, but with more structure. The silhouette was slightly sleeker and the texture a little more polished.

Gerber's make-up was retro-leaning, too. As we recently reported, purple eyeshadow is back in a big way this season, and despite its nostalgic connotations it's very current. As Dominic Skinner, global senior artist for MAC Cosmetics, told us: “Normally in the autumn/winter season, warm spicy shades are the main go-to colours as they complement the darker evenings, lower sunlight and add a level of cosiness. To mix things up, purples – being opposite to those rich, warmer colours – allow people to have a break from the norm.”

Last night, Gerber's make-up look combined heather-coloured shadow with a precisely defined browny-nude lip (another Crawford trademark). The work of Valentino's global make-up artist Raoúl Alejandre, Gaia's glam was a fresh take on Nineties beauty, and one that we predict will inspire countless looks this season.
