Kate Middleton Appears to Recycle a Jacket From 2007
Kate Middleton loves to recycle old pieces from her closet, and for an engagement today in Wales, she appeared to pull a jacket she last wore in 2007—18 years ago!
The jacket appears to be a Ralph Lauren style from 2007; back then, Kate paired it with a matching skirt and a striped button down, but today, the Princess opted to style the jacket with a brown turtleneck and pleated tartan Gucci skirt.
The repeat fashion comes amid reports that Kensington Palace would no longer be sharing details of Kate’s wardrobe with the press, though they soon clarified to say there was no change in the approach, and would sometimes release outfit details.
“The interest in Kate’s fashion has always been intense, and has the ability to transform the fortunes of brands to the extend that the phenomenon has been dubbed The Kate Effect,” T&C Contributing Editor Victoria Murphy noted. “Often, royal style choices are also credited with communicating messages beyond fashion, such as wearing an emblem or color to diplomatically honor a host or guest or to draw attention to a particular cause.”
This jacket in particular predates her royal life; Kate and William started dating when they were students at the University of St. Andrews, and went public with their relationship in 2004.
In 2007, the year Kate first wore this jacket, she and William actually broke up for a time, but soon got back together. “At the time I wasn't very happy about it, but it made me a stronger person,” Kate said in their engagement interview. “You find out things about yourself that maybe you hadn't realized, I think you can get quite consumed by a relationship when you are younger and I really valued that time for me [the months apart] although I didn't think it at the time.” They got engaged in 2010, and tied the knot in 2011, and the rest, they say, is history.
