The Duchess of Cambridge’s Gem-Inspired Style Is Precious

When the Duchess of Cambridge isn’t repeating outfits, she’s wearing the same color over and over again. Hey, the royal (or rather, her stylist), knows what works for her.

Currently on a tour of Canada, Kate Middleton has been favoring red for many of her many public appearances, an apparent nod to the dominant color on the host country’s flag. At a black-tie reception on Monday night, she showed off her toned arms in an off-the-shoulder dress from Preen that retailed for $1,715 and has already sold out. She matched the frock with bright-red suede shoes and accessorized with a diamond maple-leaf brooch and a pair of baroque pearl earrings.

Just the next day, she traveled with her family from Victoria to Whitehorse and, while getting a tour of the MacBride Museum from a Mountie, the duchess opted for a double-breasted wool pea coat from Carolina Herrera with $467 Tod’s fringed leather pumps.

While red is festive and definitely appropriate, emerald green has made two fashion appearances throughout the tour too. Attending a volleyball match on Tuesday at the University of British Columbia Okanagan in Kelowna, the 35-year-old sat courtside in a bespoke $3,545 Dolce & Gabbana stretch-crepe dress with a bow at the neck and gold-acetate buttons down the front. Then, hopping on a plane and heading north, she threw on a coat in the same shade of green as the Hobbs coat she’s worn many times before.

It’s obvious that gem tones look great on Kate, and another favorite shade seems to be sapphire. Not only does she wear it on her finger every day (formerly Princess Diana’s, the ring’s 12-carat oval blue Ceylon sapphire is surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds and set on an 18-karat white-gold band), but her outfits are often also matching. For example, upon arriving in Canada, the entire Cambridge family wore shades of blue, while the mother of two stood out in a bright Jenny Packham sheath with a flower fascinator. During her last trip abroad, Middleton stunned in a gown in basically the same shade from the same designer.

So even when Middleton isn’t wearing brightly colored gemstones, she shines as bright as one.
